- “Scream 7” aiming for a self-aware and meta storyline, akin to Wes Craven’s “New Nightmare,” may attract fans due to its unique and creative concept.
When looking back on the horror genre, the slasher franchises that stand out the most are Scream and A Nightmare On Elm Street. Throughout most of the movies, final girls Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell) and Nancy Thompson (Heather Lagenkamp) face equally beloved villains Ghostface and Freddy Krueger and hope to survive. Although it has been several years since Rooney Mara played Nancy in the 2010 remake, Scream is, of course, still alive and well, and fans look forward to Scream 7.
Since Wes Craven’s slasher franchise stands the test of time, it’s no wonder that horror fans like to compare the two franchises. One fan thinks that Scream 7 could follow one A Nightmare On Elm Street sequel and it’s definitely an intriguing concept.

Should Scream 7 Be Inspired By Wes Craven’s New Nightmare?
Redditor @bakelywood posted in a thread that Scream 7 could follow the trajectory of Wes Craven’s New Nightmare and be set at a horror movie convention. Craven’s horror movies are clever, and the fan praised Wes Craven for creating “the self-aware, meta slasher flick” and wrote:
“Now, 20 years on, I think the Scream franchise is ready to take the same approach. Bringing our characters into the real world. No more Sidney Prescott, Neve Campbell plays Neve Campbell. Courtney Cox and David Arquette are back playing themselves.”
The fan continued:
“Open the film on a horror convention, the first Scream full cast reunion in 20 years (…it’s Omar Epps and Jada Pinkett Smith in a small cameo). The cast starts getting killed off 1 by 1.”
Redditor @AllCity_King agreed that “Neve Campbell running from an irl obsessed Ghostface fan is a great idea.” This is definitely intriguing and feels like a logical path for the slasher franchise to go down. Firstly, Scream 4 and Scream (2022) feature Ghostfaces who are motivated by fame and celebrity. It wouldn’t be a huge leap for Scream 7 to tell a story about a horror convention where Campbell is unsure where the killer is since she’s surrounded by so many people who love following her acting career. This would be even more fun and entertaining considering the fact that many fans would be likely wearing Ghostface costumes and masks. It would be particularly tough to spot the killer and would make for a smart reveal at the end of the movie.
Second of all, Scream has always been a meta horror franchise and each movie contains countless references to the genre. It would make sense for the next movie to lean fully into this and feature the cast members playing versions of themselves. It would also be fun for these characters to explore the nature of their fame and what the Scream franchise has meant to them over the years.
Wes Craven’s New Nightmare was released in 1994 and told a meta story about Heather Lagenkamp, who is considering playing Nancy Thompson again in a new movie. She keeps having nightmares about Freddy Krueger, and it’s hard to separate reality from dreams. It’s easy to imagine Neve Campbell in the same situation, but instead of Scream 7 being about Campbell starring in a new Scream movie, she and her co-stars could attend the horror convention as the Reddit fan suggested.
How Successful Was Wes Craven’s New Nightmare?
Wes Craven’s horror movies all have great quotes, funny moments, and some genuinely terrifying scenes. Wes Craven’s New Nightmare is a beloved horror sequel that has been popular with fans and critics. The movie has a 77% rating on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer and a 67% rating on the Popcorn Meter, which might not be as high as some other horror movies but is better than many.
As for the box office numbers, Wes Craven’s New Nightmare grossed $19,721,741 worldwide, according to Box Office Mojo. As Forbes reported, the film earned $18 million domestically. While it did better than its $8 million budget, it grossed less money than the other movies in the franchise.
Most of all, though, Wes Craven’s New Nightmare remains popular because it was such a unique and creative idea. It’s also considered one of the better movies in the Nightmare On Elm Street franchise since it’s so intriguing and scary. It would be cool if Scream 7 could be inspired by this smart and cool sequel.
