The first season of Apple TV+‘s eerie sci-fi series Severance seems like it happened a lifetime ago since fans witnessed that mind-boggling cliffhanger at the end of season one. Now, after three painstaking years later, its return has been one of the most highly anticipated shows in quite a long time. To promote Severance season two’s comeback, its cast has taken their “innie” Lumon Industries selves into the real world in a genius pop-up marketing ploy that surprised many onlookers.
Created by Dan Erickson, who also produced the 2019 TV show Chambers, and directed by Ben Stiller, best known for his slapstick humor in comedies like There’s Something About Mary and Zoolander, Severance lifts the lid on the lives of Lumon Industries employees who undergo a “severed” procedure that compartmentalizes their work life and their outside life memories. Focusing initially on widower Adam Scott as Mark, the psychological thriller series also takes a deep dive into the lives of his co-workers whose worlds turn upside down when they realize there’s more to the severed program than meets the eye. Accumulating widespread acclaim, season one of Severance won a host of awards, including the Best Drama Series at the Critics’ Choice Awards. Now, the long wait has finally come to an end, but the show had one more surprise for fans up its sleeve before Severance season two debuted on Apple TV+ on January 17.

Severance stars Adam Scott, Britt Lower, Zach Cherry, and Patricia Arquette made a surprise appearance in the most unlikely of places as the cast emerged from a pop-up cubicle in the middle of New York’s busy Grand Central Station to promote their Apple TV+ show’s second season. The glass cubicle was a recreation of the Macrodata Refinement department from the series, complete with the weird computers that no one knows what they actually do, and even showcased that “lovely” green carpet from the mind-numbing office.
The cast of Severance also stayed completely in their characters as they went around chatting with each other and working on the computers, totally ignoring the many people’s eyes who assembled around them. Adam Scott can also be seen vacuuming the office’s carpet as Britt Lower’s Helly and Zach Cherry’s Dylan mindlessly clean their desks. Meanwhile, Patricia Arquette could be seen watching the “employees” carefully as she channeled Harmony Cobel, the head of the severed floor at Lumon until she got fired, who didn’t look too happy at times with the workforce’s activities.
Situating the Severance cast in a recreation of their office and environment while also staying in character was a genius marketing strategy by the show. Not only does it give fans of the show a closer look at the characters in real life, but it also allows others who may not have seen Severance season one a great excuse to finally jump into it because of how well it all came together. Severance season one is available to stream on Apple TV+, with season two premiering on January 17, 2025.
