Summary

  • The Nintendo Switch 2 announcement trailer confirmed that the new console will have an extra button compared to its predecessor.
  • Although most prior leaks depicted this button as being marked with the letter “C,” the real thing is featureless, offering no clues as to its functionality.
  • More information about the mysterious button is expected to arrive in April 2024, when a Switch 2-focused Nintendo Direct and hands-on preview events will be taking place.

The Nintendo Switch 2‘s rumored C button is real, but it’s not actually marked with a “C.” This revelation has fueled additional speculation among the fandom, with the Switch 2 button now looking more mysterious than ever.

The Switch successor was officially announced with a two-and-a-half-minute trailer on January 16. Nintendo’s next console is larger, more rounded, and generally sleeker-looking than its predecessor. Its overall design likely didn’t come as a surprise to the most attentive of fans, as the console had already leaked extensively in the months preceding its reveal. Many of those leaks revealed that the device will have an additional button positioned below the Home button on the right Joy-Con.

Nintendo Switch 2 Mario Kart Game Seems To Feature a Big Improvement

The newly confirmed Mario Kart game for the Nintendo Switch 2 seems to feature a big improvement compared to its predecessor.

The January 16 announcement trailer confirmed the presence of the extra button on the upcoming console. While prior Switch 2 leaks were accurate about the shape and location of the new key, the real thing isn’t actually labeled with a “C.” Instead, the square button appears almost entirely featureless. Since the sources testifying to the presence of the letter “C” were otherwise correct about other aspects of the Switch 2, it’s plausible that the console’s prototypes indeed featured a C button, but Nintendo opted to do away with that label ahead of the announcement.

One Nintendo Switch 2 Leak Correctly Predicted the Lack of ‘C’ on the New Button

The only source to accurately predict the appearance of the new button is OnLeaks, who shared accurate 360-degree renders of the Switch 2 a week ahead of the console’s official announcement. However, even this well-known consumer electronics leaker had no information about the purpose of the home key-adjacent button.

Although the button’s featureless design offers no clues as to what its function might be, someone might have already figured it out. A dataminer who inspected the latest version of the Switch OS recently suggested that the extra button will be used for chat-related functionality. This theory is based on some references to “Campus” discovered in Nintendo’s latest firmware. Campus is said to be a feature encompassing both voice and group chats for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. This discovery gave rise to the possibility that the purported C button on the Switch 2 prototypes stood for “chat.”

More information about the mysterious button is likely to emerge no later than April 2025. A Switch 2-focused Nintendo Direct is scheduled for April 2, and will be followed by a series of hands-on preview events that Nintendo will host all around the world, offering fans a chance to try the upcoming device early. As this tour will continue until early June 2025, that’s the earliest that the Switch 2 is expected to release.
