After months of waiting, a bajillion different rumors and leaks, and a handful of false dawns, Nintendo has finally revealed the Nintendo Switch 2.
The console was given a 2025 release date, with a Switch 2-focused Nintendo Direct coming in the not-so-distant future.

Pokemon’s next generation will seemingly launch on both the current Nintendo Switch and the Switch 2, according to Game Freak’s infamous hacker.
While the reveal itself was fairly devoid of information, other than the design and shape of the console, plus a peek at what looks like Mario Kart 9, Nintendo did share one or two other tidbits, one of which confirmed that the console would be backward compatible.

There were dozens of rumors about Nintendo’s next console being backwards compatible, some from official sources like the Game Freak hack and others from hearsay and insiders. The new reveal has confirmed all of this to be true.
In the trailer, Nintendo says, “Plays Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive games, as well as Nintendo Switch games.”
The message continues, “Nintendo Switch 2 plays both physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. Certain Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2. Details will be shared on the Nintendo website at a later date.”

The message was punctuated with both the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 playing a physical copy of Super Mario Wonder.
With physical sales declining, it’s great to see Nintendo lean into it, especially for those out there, like myself, who have shelves full of boxed Nintendo Switch games.
Nintendo itself confirmed that it would share more details on its next console in an upcoming direct, set to take place on April 2, 2025.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a brand new 2D Mario game launching exclusively on Nintendo Switch. Reimagining the original Mario game format yet again, it will include a lot of firsts for the series such as Elephant Mario and a playable Princess Daisy.
