After months of leaks and rumors (and years of speculation), Nintendo finally revealed the Switch 2 on January 16 with a teaser video on YouTube. Naturally, fans are already wondering when preorders for the new console will be available. Unfortunately, Switch 2 preorders are not available yet, but you can sign up for preorder notifications at Best Buy.
Specific hardware specifications were not disclosed, but the teaser says more information about specs, features, and other games will be revealed in an official Switch 2 Direct airing on April 2. Presumably, the Switch 2 release date and price will also be announced during the April Direct–which means Switch 2 preorders will likely go live soon after.
Preorders for the new Mario Kart and any other launch titles are likely to become available around the same time as well.
It’s expected that Nintendo will have Switch 2 launch units to keep up with demand in its first year and avoid the shortages that plagued the original Switch. That said, given the Switch’s success and continued popularity, the Switch 2 will likely be in high demand. Even if Nintendo comes with more initial stock than the original Switch, we expect Switch 2 preorders will be competitive, so we’ll be sure to update once preorders are available.
Upcoming Nintendo Switch Games
While the wait for the April direct–not to mention the Switch 2’s unannounced release date–will be long, the good news is there are still new Nintendo Switch games to look forward to until then.
Donkey Kong Country Returns HD just launched for Nintendo Switch, and Xenoblade Chronicles X Definitive Edition is scheduled to release on March 20, and preorders are available now. There’s also a new Rune Factory game releasing in May.
Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will also launch on the original Switch sometime in 2025. Assuming it’s specifically a Switch 1 game, that could mean it releases before the Switch 2 drops later this year– though some speculate it will be a cross-gen title that launches simultaneously on Switch 2. Either way, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond preorders are not yet available. Amazon is canceling preorders for the version of the game that Amazon listed after it was initially revealed back in 2017, which could indicate the game is coming soon.
Until then, Metroid fans can preorder copies of the upcoming Metroid Prime 1-3: A Visual Retrospective art book and the Metroid Prime 2026 Wall Calendar. Both pieces of official merch launch in July.
Pokemon Legends: Z-A is one of the few other first-party Nintendo Switch games planned for 2025, but we haven’t seen more of it since it was announced at a Nintendo Direct presentation last year. Just like Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, some fans speculate that Pokemon Legends: Z-A could be a cross-gen release. They’re just some of the many games currently rumored to be launching on Switch 2–though with the April 2 Direct only a couple months away, chances are we’ll know more about its launch game lineup soon.
