Marvel Rivals Would Walk a Fine Line with One Rumored Character’s Design

Marvel Rivals‘ roster continues to expand with Season 1, Eternal Night Falls. As the follow-up to Season 0, this season will feature 37 characters, with Mister Fantastic and Invisible Woman joining in the first half and Human Torch and The Thing slated for the second half. Interestingly, as the character line-up of the super-powered shooter continues to expand, Marvel Rivals leakers have teased five new heroes.

In addition to the extensive list of characters that have already been datamined from the game’s files, the latest leak should be particularly interesting for X-Men fans. Dataminer X0X_LEAK recently posted on X (formerly Twitter) that Professor X, Jia Jing, Paste Pot Pete, Colossus, and Locus will be added to Marvel Rivals. Though players should take this information with a grain of salt, Professor X, Jia Jing, Colossus, and Locus are all worth noting for their mutant backgrounds. However, Professor X’s in-game design might need to strike a delicate balance if he is to come to fruition in the hero-shooter.

Marvel Rivals developer NetEase Games states that some players are risking bans for continuing to break one part of the game’s terms of service.

If Marvel Rivals Adds Professor X, What Form Will He Take?

Professor X’s Wheelchair Could Cause In-Game Discrepancies

As one of the strongest X-Men in Marvel Comics, Professor X’s wheelchair is an iconic part of his character that Marvel Rivals should consider before implementing him into the game. In most stories, Professor X is depicted as paralyzed and relies on a wheelchair for mobility. Despite his impressive mental prowess and complex telepathic powers, his disability often highlights his physical vulnerability.

Currently, all the heroes in Marvel Rivals have full use of their legs, with Professor X potentially being the first to break that trend. While characters like Storm and Iron Man use flight to traverse the map, they can also walk as needed. Memes have already begun circulating involving Professor X moving around as a Strategist in the backline, or securing eliminations, all while in a wheelchair.

While Xavier could have a wheelchair or a motorized hoverchair as his mode of transportation, there’s a possibility that this could bring about some unintended complications. For instance, if he’s in a hoverchair, collision dynamics could arise due to the chair’s dimensions. Furthermore, issues with the wheelchair could lead to animation bugs, which have already been encountered a few times in Marvel Rivals.

On the other hand, NetEase Games has proven itself capable of implementing new heroes and abilities without any major issues. The developers also have the opportunity to draw from the foundations of hero-shooters that came before it. This means implementing floating physics similar to Sigma from Overwatch could be a natural fit for Professor X in Marvel Rivals.

Marvel Rivals Could Opt To Cure Professor X of His Paralysis

Notably, there are versions of Charles Xavier where he isn’t a wheelchair user. There are also various instances where he is cured of his paralysis, only to lose the use of his legs time and time again. If Marvel Rivals wanted to negate the creative challenge of bringing his wheelchair into the game entirely, it could decide to use Professor X’s Krakoa-era design where he is able to walk. Though there were controversies surrounding Xavier’s role as a key founder of Krakoa, a mutant-only nation designed as a sanctuary, this version of the X-Man would still be a valid variant to use, especially given Marvel Rivals‘ focus on the multiverse. Hopefully, if the rumors are true and the leader of the X-Men is being considered for the game, he won’t have any trouble with his mobility.

Map leaks for Marvel Rivals have included Krakoa and Arakko.
