How to Get and Use Variable Dice in Honkai: Star Rail

Variable Dice is one of the new crafting materials introduced in the big Amphoreus update for Honkai: Star Rail, and while it isn’t as impactful as some other items, it can definitely alleviate some of the frustration players have with the game’s Relic system.

Getting a god roll Relic in HSR involves a ton of luck and patience, and even more so once players actually start upgrading them. Variable Dice helps alleviate the latter part of the process, and they’ll be extremely valuable once players get their inventories stocked up with good relics that were unlucky enough to get their substat upgrade distributions messed up.

How to Get Variable Dice in HSR

Variable Dice description in HSR

There are a couple of ways to get Variable Dice, and the one that does not involve spending any real money is to use the game’s crafting system. To make one Variable Dice, you’ll need three Self-Modeling Resins, a rare resource that, so far, can only be obtained via the battle pass. Players can get a Self-Modeling Resin in the pass for free once they reach Level 20, and they can get another upon reaching level 50 after purchasing the premium pass.

The battle pass resets after every patch, which roughly translates to a six-week duration for each pass. It will take a little over a month to get enough Self-Modeling Resins to craft one Variable Dice. However, players who decide to get the premium battle pass can get a Variable Dice upon reaching Level 40. Keep in mind that Self-Modeling Resins are used for crafting custom relics in HSR.

HSR may have events that include Variable Die as rewards. Make sure to check the rewards in each event so as not to miss out on anything.

How to Use Variable Dice

Rerolling a relic in HSR

To use Variable Dice, players must first upgrade a relic all the way to 15. Select a fully-upgraded relic, and click on the Reroll button on the lower-right. Rerolling will cost one Variable Dice every time regardless of how many times a relic has been rerolled before.

To be clear, rerolling a relic only affects the upgrade distribution for substats, not the substats themselves. If you use a Variable Dice on a relic that rolled +4 to DEF, then those four upgrades will then get randomly distributed to the other substats.

Players who want to get relics with specific substats will have to use Wishful Resin instead, a type of crafting resource specifically made for picking specific substats during the Relic Synthesis process.
