Officers will usually be your main targets in battles in Dynasty Warriors: Origins. Officers have larger health bars than basic units and can also guard and have fortification, making it more difficult to take them down.

Assaults are powerful attacks that can sometimes take down an officer instantly, or deal a huge amount of damage. To Assault an officer, you’ll first need to get through their fortification, represented by the yellow shields over their health bar; here’s how to do it.

How To Break An Officer’s Guard In Dynasty Warriors: Origins

The only way to trigger an Assault is by depleting all shields of Fortification over the enemy’s head. Normal attacks won’t always damage those shields especially when the enemy is guarding. When guarding they can still take damage, but their fortification shields won’t crack and depleate. To break an Officers guard and lower their fortification you have a few options:

  • Parrying their attacks
  • Attacking them while they attack
  • Use Combat Arts
  • Use Musou Attacks

Landing Parries

Musou attacks are powerful and should be saved for very strong opponents and are basically your trump card and should be saved as such. Parrying is one of the best ways to break their guard as landing a parry will have you follow up with a palm strike-like attack that knocks them back, interrupts their attack, and cracks their first shield of fortification. You can parry by using the block button right before the enemy’s attack hits you, as long as it is a basic attack where they are not glowing orange or red.

Once a shield of fortification is cracked, all following attacks will continue to damage fortification.

Combat Arts & Perfect Dodging

Combat Arts are powerful attacks that use Bravery but always break the enemy’s fortification. Opening a fight with a Combat Art will initially break their guard and allow your following basic attacks to further break their fortification. Getting a perfect dodge at the last moment may not break the enemy’s guard, but it will recover your Bravery and let you use your Combat Arts more often.

There are also Combat Arts that can interrupt Dangerous Attacks, indicated when an enemy glows orange. Landing these interruption arts will greatly deplete the enemy’s fortification while also interrupting a powerful attack from coming your way.

How To Assault Enemies In Dynasty Warriors: Origins

Whenever an Officer’s fortification is fully depleted they will be knocked to the ground and not move for a few moments. While you can take this opportunity to attack them, you can also approach and use an Assault. Assaults are done by pressing the same button as your Strong Attack:

  • Triangle on PlayStation
  • Y on Xbox
  • Right Click on PC

Depending on the remaining health of the officer, the Assault will either kill them outright or allow you to repeatedly press the button for continuous powerful attacks. The attack range of an assault is also very wide, and enemies nearby will take a lot of damage. Assaulting an officer next to another who has full fortification is a great way to break it and also damage them.
