Summary
- Kingpin’s role as mayor presents a unique challenge for heroes in the MCU
- Unlike past MCU villains, Kingpin can use the city’s resources to his advantage
- Daredevil faces a psychological and political battle with Kingpin that goes beyond physical confrontation.
The MCU has introduced its audiences to a vast array of villains, from intergalactic threats like Thanos to chaotic criminals like the Vulture. However, the heroes of the MCU have rarely had to contend with a foe as insidious and deeply entrenched in power as Wilson Fisk appears to be in Daredevil: Born Again. In Daredevil: Born Again the man otherwise known as Kingpin isn’t just the biggest baddie on the block and a leader in organized crime. This time around, Fisk is the mayor of New York City. Because of that, Kingpin presents a wholly unique challenge for Matt Murdock, blending political clout with his trademark ruthless ambition.
Unlike traditional MCU villains who thrive in the shadows or bring destruction from distant worlds, Kingpin wields the full authority of the city’s resources, laws, and institutions, making him a force unlike anything the MCU’s heroes have faced before. This stark contrast in villainy shifts the dynamic for the heroes, forcing them to confront the gray areas of justice in ways that their usual battles with aliens or overt criminals never demanded. While they’ve faced threats capable of leveling cities, dealing with a figure who controls the very systems meant to protect society introduces an entirely new level of tension.

Daredevil: Born Again Throws New Problem At Matt Murdock
With the new trailer for Daredevil: Born Again giving an inkling into what audience can expect when the show hits Disney+ in March, it’s clear that this version of Matthew Murdock isn’t going to be able to just go toe-to-toe with Kingpin in the more traditional way.
MCU heroes are used to simply solving every problem with their fists. Even when the Kingpin last appeared in an MCU show, he was still the guy that everyone knew was a leader of the criminal underground. His debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was so impressive and intimidating that even Hawkeye didn’t want anything to do with him. But when push came to shove, Kate Bishop shoved him around plenty. There wasn’t any sort of pause because of who he was or what role he might have. Of course, he also hadn’t risen to the rank he’s holding in the trailer.
In other words, the last time Kingpin showed up, he was like every other villain when it came right down to it. Had Murdock met that version of Wilson Fisk, he simply could have tried to take him on and take him down. But things are different with Fisk having been elected as mayor of New York. Kingpin has an entire police force to call on. He’s giving off the look of someone who is walking the straight and narrow. Someone who is well respected by the average citizen. When it comes to villains, the MCU has never really had this kind of baddie. At the very least, the bad guy hid his criminal enterprises by pretending to be an average person. Never someone with this much governmental power.
Kingpin Hasn’t Turned Over A New Leaf
Kingpin’s ability to mask his corruption behind the guise of a respectable businessman and now the top public official in New York makes him a formidable foe who doesn’t just fight with brute strength but manipulates the power of perception and politics.

In Daredevil: Born Again’s trailer he shows that he’s someone who possesses quite a bit of confidence that he’s untouchable. He’s someone who is so confident as a matter of fact that he can sit down with Matt Murdock, knowing that the two are actually enemies and talk to him like they’re old friends. That display is a show of confidence that even Thanos doesn’t really have, because he knows that if he tried, the Avengers would throw a punch or shoot a laser or swing an axe at any given moment.
Diner Showdown Underlines The Problem
The Daredevil: Born Again trailer shows that Matt Murdock has a unique problem he’ll need to solve. Obviously, there will be villains in the show that he can just kick and punch and beat to a pulp. The trailer showed that as well, in vivid detail.
But the diner showdown, where the two men talk as though they’re old friends shows that Daredevil has his work cut out for him. Kingpin has a level of confidence that isn’t shown much in the MCU because he knows Murdock can’t just start throwing punches against the Mayor of New York.

The Daredevil: Born Again trailer showed that the face-off between Murdock and Kingpin is going to be different than any kind of showdown that’s gone done in the MCU. While this is similar to the original Daredevil Netflix show, it’s something that hasn’t been canon for the Marvel Cinematic Universe until this spring.
