Riot “screwed up” on LoL’s new battle pass, reveals fixes for upcoming patch

Riot Games has officially responded to the issues surrounding Blue Essence and unlocking new champions in League of Legends. The switch to a seasonal battle pass sent brought some unexpected changes the playerbase weren’t especially happy with, and now the developer is looking into solutions.

League of Legends got a new battle pass system starting January 9, 2025. The rollout of Noxus Act 1 was going to start a new era for the MOBA, altering progression and making things better for everyone who enjoys the multiplayer game. That’s not what happened, as reports of ludicrous playtimes for enough Blue Essence to unlock new champions started to gain traction.

Riot has now admitted things aren’t going as planned, and revealed how it’s going to be fixed. The post starts by stating: “We meaningfully screwed up on this one. The numbers we shipped were pretty far off from what they should be for many of you.” Then outlines what’ll change.

The total Blue Essence from Milestones will be increased to 9000 – almost double the previous amount of 4,750 – and the Epilogue milestones will provide 750 Blue Essence instead of 50. Those are meaty changes, but the intention is to offset some unfortunate and unforeseen grinding players were finding themselves stuck with.

These changes arrive for Act 2, because so many have already progressed through Act 1. 4,250 BE is being provided as a one-time reward in a small mission to compensate for this act, before things are rebalanced in the second. The last champion capsule will also be a Glorious Champion Capsule starting in Act 2.

As for what went wrong, it’s all down to First Win of the Day. Devs didn’t account enough for how much removing that boost impacting XP and Blue Essence. It’s noted at the end of the post that Riot’s looking into where the calculations became off-kilter.
