After making some changes to the blue essence earning system, Riot Games is taking a step back to fix the issues in the upcoming patches.
Riot Games admit they “screwed up” on new Blue Essence model
In a blog post by the dev team, game designer Riot Meddler stated they will be shipping fixes to the blue essence system in the upcoming Patches 25.S1.2 and 25.S1.3.
According to Meddler, Riot’s initial goal with the new system was to make Blue Essence earn rates to be the same, or slightly better, for all players, and increase it for the newer and casual player base.
“We intended for BE income to move over to the new Pass as part of simplifying League’s rewards systems, but BE from the Pass was intended to, at minimum, offset any losses elsewhere,” he said.
For the majority of the community, however, Blue Essence rates ended up being lower and the lower XP made it much harder to new accounts to get to level 30 and access Ranked. “We failed to communicate that the champion capsules from account level rewards after level 30 were being moved to the Pass when we talked about other changes in November,” he added.
Regarding the BE issue, Riot Meddler stated that the changes came out close to intended for the casual players, but they ended up hurting the hardcore ones.
The fix
As a result, Riot is going to increase the free Pass earn rates, increasing the total BE from Milestones from 4750 to 9000 and increasing repeatable Epilogue milestones from 50 to 750 BE. These fixes will be live in Patch 25.S1.2 and the changes will be implemented before the Act 2 Pass goes live.
Meddler added, however, that the adjustments cannot be made for the Act 1 Pass. Instead, they will be granting 4250 BE through a one-time easily-completable Mission, which will go live by Patch 25.S1.3, to compensate.
Moreover, Riot will be changing the final Champion Capsule in the Pass to a Glorious Champion Capsule starting in the Act 2 Pass.
Account XP
Regarding account XP, Meddler confirmed it will be increased by 40%, making it close to how it was beforehand. The game dev explained that they didn’t factor the First Win of the Day experience into the calculations for BE income—both directly from that XP boost and the indirect faster access to Champion Capsules from account leveling.
“As for account XP, the problem is very similar—we hadn’t accounted for the loss of FWotD, which meant drastically slowing the progression of accounts and therefore access to Ranked,” he explained.
