Summary
- Final Fantasy 16 is rumored for Xbox release soon.
- Square Enix is reportedly moving away from console exclusivity for its games.
- The Final Fantasy 16 Xbox port announcement is expected at the Xbox Developer Direct on January 23.
If the latest rumors are to be believed, 2023’s Final Fantasy 16 will be released for the Xbox Series X in the near future. Final Fantasy 16 was originally released on the PlayStation 5 as a timed-exclusive, eventually making its way to PC in 2024. But since Final Fantasy 16 has yet to release on Xbox or any other home console, it is still considered a PS5 console exclusive at the time of this writing.
Final Fantasy 16 publisher Square Enix has made it clear that it plans to move away from console exclusivity for its games, with rumors heating up about once-PlayStation exclusive Final Fantasy titles jumping ship to other platforms. This apparently includes Final Fantasy 7 Remake, with leakers claiming that not only is that game coming to Xbox, but the Nintendo Switch 2 as well. In the meantime, it seems that Final Fantasy 16 is another FF game that is jumping ship.

Final Fantasy 16 Director Teases New Project
In an end-of-year interview, Final Fantasy 16 game director Hiroshi Takai teases that he will be working on a new project in 2025.
Leaker Ignus, who has had reliable scoops in the past, has claimed on Twitter that Final Fantasy 16 will come to Xbox “very soon” and that the announcement is “just behind the corner.” Specifically, the Final Fantasy 16 Xbox port announcement is expected to come during the Xbox Developer Direct on Thursday, January 23. According to Ignus, the Final Fantasy 16 Xbox port will be a surprise announcement and is not the mystery game that has already been teased for the event.
Final Fantasy 16 is Rumored for Xbox
This year’s Xbox Developer Direct is confirmed to feature Doom: The Dark Ages, South of Midnight, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, along with a mystery game. Xbox hasn’t provided any hints itself as to what the mystery game is, but it’s said to be a classic Japanese IP with decades of history. Since Square Enix will supposedly be at the Xbox Developer Direct to showcase the Final Fantasy 16 Xbox port, it’s possible, though not a guarantee, that the mystery game is also from the publisher.
Now the only question is what the mystery game is. There are all kinds of possibilities, but keeping the focus on Square Enix helps narrow things down a bit. Perhaps the mystery game will be Kingdom Hearts 4, which was announced years ago but hasn’t had all that many details revealed for it just yet. Maybe the game is the long-rumored Final Fantasy 9 remake, or some other Final Fantasy title. It could also be something completely unexpected, and so fans will just have to tune in to the Xbox Developer Direct on January 23 at 10am PT to find out.
