Summary
- The director of Marvel Rivals has reconfirmed that there are no plans to add role queue to the game.
- Clearly some players thought a new season would mean an update on the missing feature, but apparently not.
- The devs want players to explore team composition and for Rivals to take a “Marvel-style approach” to team composition.
Marvel Rivals has had a pretty incredible first month. Millions of people have been playing, it was the most-played game on Steam last weekend, and you’ll struggle to find someone with a bad word to say about it. That’s unless you ask someone who’s used to playing hero shooters with role queue, and those people are only going to be more annoyed with an update on that absent feature provided this week.
Marvel Rivals’ director Guangyun Chen sat down with Metro to talk about all things connected to the popular hero shooter, and role queue was one of the first topics discussed. Just like Overwatch, different Rivals characters have different roles, and ideally, a team of six will have a mix of vanguards, duelists, and strategists. Since there’s no role queue forcing certain players to pick certain roles, that doesn’t always happen.

“Cheating in any form is something we will battle relentlessly.”
Despite requests for role queue to be introduced to Rivals, thus forcing us to choose more balanced teams, Chen confirmed there are no plans for it and explained why. Chen describes their team’s stance on it as a “Marvel-style approach” where players assemble their teams and test out how different characters work together, particularly when it comes to the game’s many team-up abilities.
The Marvel Rivals Team Still Has No Plans To Add Role Queue
No Matter How Much You Might Want It
The key, according to Chen, is for the players to have freedom and to provide them with an almost indefinite amount of different team compositions to experiment with. If Rivals had role queue and there needed to be at least one strategist on every team, that wouldn’t be possible. If, even after all that, you’re still hoping for a change of heart, Chen closed that particular chapter of the interview by saying, “We believe no role queue will lead to a richer gaming experience for everyone.”
That means, for the foreseeable future, if you want to have a team made up entirely of tanks, you can. I wouldn’t recommend it, but if you’re a Venom main and you happen upon a lobby with five fellow tank lovers, it could happen. It also means if you’re struggling because there’s not a healer on your team, you’ll need to be the one who steps up and switches to a strategist.
If the issue is there aren’t any strategists you like on the roster, you might not have long to wait for more. NetEase will reportedly be adding a new character every six weeks and odds are there will be a healer or two among them. The next characters, The Thing and Human Torch, won’t be strategists, though, so will only add to your role queue woes, especially if the community takes a shine to them.
