How To Use The Sketchbook In Aloft

Something has clearly happened to these islands you’re exploring in Aloft, with plenty of abandoned structures and half-completed townships dotting the map. You’ll find villages, temples, and even colossal ships that’ve crashed into the rocks floating in your world’s sky, and in these places, you’ll also find inspiration.

The Best Sandbox Games

The sandbox genre covers dozens of different games. Here’s our list of the best titles you can enjoy on console and PC.

With your sketchbook handy, you’ll be able to sketch up ideas for new furniture to build back on your home island as you draw sketches of the different furniture you find in the ruins of Aloft. See something on an island you like? Draw it and then go craft it at home!

Sketch New Furniture Designs As You Explore

Using a sketchbook on a wooden storage chest in Aloft.

It’s not long into playing Aloft – it’s during the Forgotten Legacy quest when you’re first learning about cleansing islands of their corruption – that you come across what looks like the ruins of someone’s home. By default, you’ll know how to make a few standard items in your crafting menu to get you started as you establish a home planet – simple wooden flooring and walls that allow you to begin designing and customizing your home islands to feel more like, well, a home.

But if you’ve been noticing all the ruins around you as you keep exploring, we hope you’ve found a sketchbook in the chests and baskets strewn about, since you can then use it to draw furniture you see in the wild while you’re exploring new islands. While not everything is able to be replicated in this way, by using your sketchbook and one piece of paper, you can figure out how to make tons of different crafting pieces to make your house feel more homey.

You can either craft paper pulp on a workbench by combining one grasswort, three small plants, and one clean water, or you can also collect paper from the books you see lying around in some of these abandoned settlements.

While walking around with your sketchbook equipped and having entered sketching mode to use it, aim your cursor at pieces of furniture or different building structures you find to see from what you’re able to take inspiration. Things you can sketch will appear highlighted in orange when you aim at them, while recipes you already know how to make are gray. The game will also tell you that you know the recipe instead of allowing you to waste paper drawing something you already have.

For furniture, you’ll want to consider sketching things like:

  • Lamps, which can be made of different materials and into different shapes or sizes. These appear in numerous structures.
  • Tables and chairs that you can make into a variety of shapes after learning new shape recipes as well. These will often be in the ruins of homes or at overlook areas.
  • Rugs you notice under beds or tables in ruined homes.
  • Hanging decoration pieces like decorative rope patterns you see hanging from walls in abandoned settlements.

But don’t forget about keeping a sharp eye out for additional building structures that you can then use to construct a real home for yourself on your home island, a more elaborate ship, or whatever your heart desires! Not only can you find new wooden structures like curved walls and circular platforms, but you’ll notice a wide variety of stone structural pieces when you stumble across the ruins of temples or castles.

Be sure to highlight different shapes of pieces, things like walls, flooring, fences, and door frames, which can be placed in just about any shape you’d like. Most of the wooden building materials are available in stone variants as well, and you’ll find ample shapes of turf roof to top everything off with a vibrant green hue.

After sketching a new piece of furniture, it’ll be added to your construction menu immediately, which means you’ll have access to that recipe from then on in this save!
