After completing the main campaign, and the Cruel difficulty Acts 1 through 3, players reach the Endgame and access to the Atlas of Worlds. In the Atlas map Path of Exile 2 players will come across a variety of unique structures that offer unique gameplay mechanics or challenges, like the Realmgate, Lost Towers, the Burning Monolith, and of course, Citadels.

Path of Exile 2: Expedition Guide – Passives, Artifacts, & Rewards
Path of Exile 2 brings back the Expedition event as an endgame encounter, letting players blow up the ground to spawn empowered enemies.
Citadels are one of the most elusive endgame objectives. Lost Towers rise above the Fog of War, and the Realmgate and Burning Monolith spawn near the Atlas start point. In the 0.1.1 update Citadels will be made to be more visible from further away, but if you can’t find any in your Atlas map, follow these tips to find more Citadels in PoE 2.
What Are Citadels For In PoE 2?
In Path of Exile 2, Citadels are a unique type of map node that comes in three varieties: Iron, Copper, and Stone. Each Citadel houses a different Boss, which re-uses bosses from the PoE 2 campaign with major power-ups suited for an endgame boss. When you defeat these bosses, each will drop a Crisis Fragment.
These are essentially Pinnacle Boss keys which are required to open the Burning Monolith, home to the Atlas pinnacle boss, the Arbiter of Ash. This completes the “Pinnacle of Flame” quest you unlock after entering the Burning Monolith map for the first time and inspecting the locked door.
- Iron Citadel: Count Geonor (Act 1 boss). Should appear as a large city with black walls.
- Copper Citadel: Jamanra, The Abomination (Act 2 boss). Looks like a large encampment circling the map node.
- Stone Citadel: Doryani (Act 3 boss). Resembles a stone pyramid, similar to the ziggurats in Act 3.
When you find Citadels, PoE 2 players must use a Waystone of at least Tier 15 to travel to its map node and activate the Citadel. Then, like other Maps, you only have one chance to get through the map and defeat the boss without dying.
These areas are worth going out of your way for not just for the Crisis Fragments, but also for the chance to get extremely good loot from these bosses. Once completed, you cannot re-run a Citadel. Your only option is to route through the Atlas to find another one.
How To Find More Citadels In PoE 2
With the 0.1.1 update, Path of Exile 2 Citadels become significantly easier to see from further away on the Atlas map. With the patch, Citadels will gain a large beacon of light above their location that can be seen through the Fog of War, helping guide players towards each Citadel location more efficiently.

The Ritual event in Path of Exile 2 challenges players with a wave of enemies that spawn around Altars throughout certain Atlas maps.
If you do not see any Citadels near your location on the Atlas map, the best way to find more Citadel locations is to route in as straight a line as you can in a single direction. This reveals the most Fog of War and expands your view of the overall Atlas map the most. Along the way, path toward any Lost Towers you come across – completing these reveals a large area of Fog around the tower, which could reveal a nearby Citadel.
Each of the three types of Citadel tends to spawn in a specific biome. If you are hunting for a specific type of Citadel to gain entrance to the Burning Monolith, consider pathing towards any revealed area on your map of the appropriate biome type.
- Iron Citadels tend to spawn in Grass or Forest biomes
- Copper Citadels tend to spawn in Desert biomes
- Stone Citadels tend to spawn along the coast of any biome
Once you find a Citadel, it’s safe to assume that there aren’t any nearby. Only very rarely do multiple Citadels spawn on the same screen of the Atlas map when fully zoomed out. The best way to find more Citadels after discovering your first is to go in a straight line in a completely different direction from the path you took to get to the previous one.
With the 0.1.1 update, though, you should be able to see any Citadel beacons within a few screens of your revealed areas of the map. If you do not see any Citadels within the fog of war once this patch goes live, follow the same tips to find Citadels – path in a straight line in a single direction, and you should eventually see a beacon in the fog to guide you.
