Animals are important in Aloft – not only can they help restore the ecosystem of various islands, they’re also an excellent source of materials on your own island. Sheep provide wool and chickens can provide feathers and eggs. This guide covers how to collect animals and how to make sure that they are cared for.

There’s no wrong way to play a cozy sandbox game like Aloft, but we’ve got some tips to get you started.
As you explore in Aloft, you might come across animals on islands. To be able to send them back to your home island, you’ll need to swing your ship around and bring right alongside wherever you’ve found the lucky creatures.
We will update this guide with more information and animals from biomes later in the game.
How To Collect Animals In Aloft
Here’s how to collect the animals in each Aloft biome.
Emerald Isles
In the Emerald Isles, the starting area of Aloft, you’ll start to find sheep and alpacas roaming the islands.
To collect these, you’ll need to feed them Hay.
Hay can be crafted at a workbench with three small plants, which you can harvest by using a scythe on various bushes around the island.
Once you’ve fed the animals, you can pick them up and send them to your home island.
The sheep will appear on your island, and they will stay there until you remove them.
Fallen Heights
Once you’ve crossed the first meteor field (if that’s what we’re calling it), you’ll enter Aloft’s second biome: Fallen Heights.
Here you’ll find chickens, or pheasants, or some other kind of bird that we haven’t decided on a name for yet.
To tame these animals, you’ll need to grind any crop seed at the Millstone crafting station – this will create pellets.
Then the process is the same. Feed them, and send them back to your home island.
Caring For Your Animals
Animal husbandry is on the to-do list for the developers in early acess of Aloft, we assume these systems will become more filled-out in time.
Feeding Your Animals
You will need to monitor your animal’s hunger by checking on them individually, at least until you unlock the trough.
The trough makes it so you can just place food and the animals will simply feed themselves. This saves a lot of time. The trough knowledge stone is located in Fallen Heights.
You will be unable to collect animal resources if your animals are hungry.
Collecting Animal Resources
Wool is an important early game resource only acquired from sheep and alpacas.
You’ll need shears to collect the resources from your animals.
