Hollow Knight: Best Builds For Grimm

Grimm is one of the most iconic and beloved characters in Hollow Knight, and the metroidvania genre as a whole. An enigmatic figure with a weirdly cool look, the leader of the Grimm Troupe enthralls the Knight during its journey to save Hallownest and offers a meaningful side quest to bring closure to the Grimm Troupe’s adventures.

Hollow Knight Is Ripe For a Roguelike Spin-off

A new Hollow Knight spin-off may seem far away right now, but a roguelike could be an economic and fun direction to take the series.

In these said adventures, players will have to fight Grimm at least once before having the option to fight a bigger, better, and badder version of him to complete the Grimm Troupe DLC. Troupe Master Grimm and Nightmare King Grimm are some of the hardest fights in the game and require precise movement, quick reactions, and serious tenacity to persevere the death dance. Having the right charms to go along with these fights will be incredibly important to beat both versions of Grimm.

All charm builds for both Grimm fights in the base game require Grimmchild to be equipped in order to access the boss fights. This charm takes up two charm notches.

Best Charm Builds For Troupe Master Grimm

Hollow Knight Grimm pantheon fight

Troupe Master Grimm will be the first time players have a chance to familiarize themselves with Grimm’s general moveset and attacking patterns. It is a notably fast-paced battle and is more of a dance rather than an all-out brawl. Players will have to be elegant and carefully choose their windows of opportunity rather than mindlessly face tanking his attacks. As such, the following builds listed below are generally enough to complete a fairly difficult boss fight.

Completing the Troupe Master Grimm boss fight will unlock the final Charm Notch which is imperative to use some of the best builds to tackle Nightmare King Grimm.

Nail Build

Troupe Master Grimm Nail Build Hollow Knight
  • Unbreakable/Fragile Strength
  • Quick Slash
  • Longnail
  • Grimmchild (Mandatory)

This charm build ensures that players can output massive damage with their Nail in between Grimm’s attacks. As this fight is significantly slower than the Nightmare King version, a Nail build is perfectly viable to sneak in a lot of hits thanks to Quick Slash.

Unbreakable or Fragile Strength is mandatory in any Nail build as it directly increases the amount of damage the Nail does. Heading into this fight, most players should aim to have at least the Coiled Nail or the Pure Nail to reliably get through Grimm’s health pool.

While Nail builds usually include Mark of Pride, Longnail is a solid alternative in this instance since Grimmchild will take up two charm slots. The range increase on the Nail attack will be slightly less compared to Mark of Pride, but it can be very useful to get some hits on Grimm during the end time of his attacks, such as the Diving Dash and the Uppercut.

Hollow Knight: How To Get The Monarch Wings

In a game as complex as Hollow Knight, having all the moves available is critical. Here’s how to get the Monarch Wings and gain an extra jump.

Spell Build

Troupe Master Grimm Spell Build Hollow Knight
  • Shaman Stone
  • Grubsong
  • Spell Twister
  • Unbreakable/Fragile Heart
  • Grimmchild (Mandatory)

For players that prefer to do damage via Spells or are not comfortable enough with the Nail, the Spell build is the best option to quickly defeat Grimm. By this point, players should have the Descending Dark, Abyss Shriek, and Shade Soul spell upgrades. The former two are some of the best attacks in the game to reliably defeat some of the toughest bosses in the game.

Shaman Stone is one of the best charms in the game, and is mandatory in any Spell-based build since it greatly amps up the damage the Knight’s spells can do. Pairing this up with Spell Twister will ensure that players can get plenty of spells out in one rotation before charging it back up with Nail hits.

However, avoiding a hit against this boss can be a bit hard, so bringing along Grubsong can be really beneficial to keep your Soul gauge topped up. Unbreakable/Fragile Heart rounds out this build by giving extra masks which allow for Soul to be used mainly for Spells.

Best Charm Builds For Nightmare King Grimm

NKG flame pillar

Nightmare King Grimm is a completely different league compared to Troupe Master Grimm. First and foremost, he now deals double damage, which makes him a lethal threat. If players make one or two missteps, the entire fight will be done in a jiffy. He also moves much faster than his regular version and can be quite hard to keep up with, even for experienced players.

Additionally, he gains a new attack while having flaming trails to most of his usual attacks that also deal double damage. This new attack that spawns flame pillars is one of Nightmare King Grimm’s biggest weaknesses, as it can allow players to get in a couple of Abyss Shrieks to deal massive burst damage. Here are the best charm builds to tackle one of the hardest metroidvania bosses.

Best Build

Best Nighmare King Grimm Build Hollow Knight
  • Unbreakable/Fragile Strength
  • Shaman Stone
  • Mark of Pride
  • Grimmchild (Mandatory)

A pure Nail build is not a feasible option against Nightmare King Grimm to take him down efficiently. Instead, a hyrbid Nail/Spell Build will yield the most success as Abyss Shriek and Descending Dark are incredibly powerful Spells in this fight.

Therefore, bringing Shaman Stone is a must to consistently damage Nightmare King Grimm. Unbreakable/Fragile Strength and Mark of Pride will allow for more damage in windows where using Spells is either not possible or comes at the risk of taking double damage.

Hollow Knight: How To Get The Mantis Claw

In Hollow Knight, there are various skills that players can take advantage of. Here’s how to get the Mantis Claw to reach new areas.

Alternate Build

Alternate Nightmare King Grimm Build Hollow Knight
  • Grubsong
  • Sharp Shadow
  • Shaman Stone
  • Spell Twister
  • Nailmaster’s Glory
  • Grimmchild (Mandatory)

A more defensive build for the Nightmare King Grimm revolves around utilizing Spells and the criminally underused Nail Arts, while having tools to escape some of his most lethal attacks. As with most Spell-based builds, Shaman Stone and Spell Twister are mandatory that greatly boost the player’s damage output.

Coupling Grubsong alongside these two charms is always a safe option to get some much-needed Soul. The last two charms will be Sharp Shadow, which will allow players to dash through most of Nightmare King Grimm’s attacks, provided they have the Shade Cloak, and deal damage to him, and Nailmaster’s Glory. The latter is superb at making Nail Arts a legitimate threat to Nightmare King Grimm and can chip away at his health pool along with smart Spell usage.
