E-Day Should Come Back Out The Gate Swinging

It’s been over seven months since Gears of War: E-Day was first officially unveiled with an in-engine trailer at 2024’s Xbox Games Showcase live-streamed event. Since then, there have been little to no announcements about Gears of War: E-day save for E-Day themed merchandise posts for Xbox’s Gear Shop and a reveal that John DiMaggio and Carlos Ferro will reprise their roles as Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago. While E-Day hasn’t received an official release window, other games first shown at the Games Showcase have already received new announcements, release windows, and gameplay exhibits, such as Doom: The Dark Ages. In response to this lack of news, The Coalition should strive to pull out all the stops for E-Day’s next moment in the spotlight.

Gears of War: E-Day Already Has the Perfect Release Date Available to It

Gears of War: E-Day may be expected to launch this year, but on the off chance it doesn’t, it already has the perfect release date lined up for it.

Everything Known About Gears of War: E-Day So Far

Despite the current Gears of War: E-Day news drought, The Coalition released a lot of information about its next project immediately after its reveal. In an Xbox Wire article titled “Reinventing A Mad World: Why Gears of War: E-Day Represents the Future of the Series”, Creative Director Matt Searcy and Brand Director Nicole Fawcette explained the setting and tone of E-Day and clarified why E-Day is being developed as opposed to Gears 6. Searcy and Fawcette explained that the storyline left at the end of Gears 5 isn’t abandoned, but The Coalition was so energized to tell the story of Emergence Day since it’s the origin of all the major events seen in the Gears of War series.

Gears of War: E-Day is set 14 years before Gears of War 1 and about 42 years before Gears 5, when the Locust Horde emerged from Sera’s underground Hollow tunnels and first attacked humanity, starting the 17-year-long Locust War. Here, players will play as young Fenix and Santiago, as the two are just beginning to establish their friendship and become accustomed to fighting the grubs. While E-Day is expected to play similarly to Gears of Wars games of old, the Locust will appear more monstrous than ever before to exacerbate how unprepared the Coalition of Ordered Governments was for the Locust invasion. This is shown in the E-Day trailer, as Fenix is barely able to take down a common Locust Drone with a Retro Lancer.

It’s estimated that 25% of all humans on Sera were killed by the Locust Horde on Emergence Day.

How Gears of War: E-Day Can Hit the Floor Running in 2025

While Gears of War: E-Day missed out on appearing at the Consumer Technology Association trade show alongside Doom: The Dark Ages, The Coalition still has ample opportunities to show off new details and gameplay to the public throughout 2025. E-Day could potentially appear as a surprise announcement or subject at the upcoming Xbox Developer Direct on January 23rd as its fellow Showcase game Doom: The Dark Ages will have a full game reveal during the event. It may appear at the upcoming DICE Awards and Summit in February, but Gears of War: E-Day is far more likely to appear again at a 2025 Xbox Games Showcase or Summer Games Fest in June 2025. Given The Coalition’s secrecy regarding E-Day, it may want to wait for its one-year announcement anniversary to blow players away with new revelations.

If Gears of War: E-Day does appear at a 2025 Xbox Games Showcase or similar gaming event, The Coalition should kick things off with a gameplay trailer. E-Day’s announce trailer was made in–engine, but it probably isn’t reflective of E-Day’s proper gameplay. Since The Coalition has hyped up the Locust’s new nightmarish presence in E-Day, a gameplay demo could depict Fenix and Santiago running through a Seran city as emergence holes begin to appear everywhere, swallowing crowds of people, and unleashing rampaging hordes of Locust troops. In terms of direct combat, this demo could have Fenix attempt to stab a Drone with a Retro Lancer only for it to bounce off its skin, showcasing how ill-prepared the COG is and the necessity of the chainsaw bayonet.

Potential New Gears of War: E-Day Details

Following Gears of War: E-Day’s gameplay demo, The Coalition could announce a release window for the game for either late 2025 or sometime in 2026, based on how Gears of War 4 and Gears 5 both came out roughly one year after their initial announcement in 2015 and 2018. The Coalition could further announce a public beta for E-Day’s PvP multiplayer and PvE horde mode to entice new and returning players after the six years since Gears 5 released. If Gears of War: E-Day does turn out to be releasing in 2025, The Coalition could unveil a limited E-Day edition of the new Xbox Series X model, since every other mainline Gears game has had a special Xbox console made for it since Gears of War 3.
