Dragon Quest 10 Coming to an Unexpected New Platform

Dragon Quest 10 Coming to an Unexpected New Platform

Summary

  • Dragon Quest 10 Offline has been released on mobile devices, but only in Japan.
  • Despite fan demand, a Western release of the 2012 MMORPG Dragon Quest 10 remains unlikely.
  • A single-player offline version of the game was first released in Japan in 2022.

Square Enix has announced that Dragon Quest 10 Offline is now available for download on mobile devices, but only in Japan. The single-player title is also discounted in the region for a limited time, though unfortunately, it remains unlikely that a Western release of Dragon Quest 10 is in the cards anytime soon.

Initially released in Japan in 2012, Dragon Quest 10 remains the only MMORPG in the long-running series. Despite being ported to many different consoles over the years, Dragon Quest 10 never saw a release in the West, making it one of the few mainline titles not to do so. Fan demand has remained high since its initial release, but despite members of the game’s development team often voicing their interest in localizing the game for overseas audiences, it seems unlikely that it will ever happen. A newly released mobile port has now been revealed, though fans in the West should temper their expectations.

As reported by Gematsu, Dragon Quest 10 Offline and its expansion, The Sleeping Hero and the Guiding Ally, are now available to play on iOS and Android devices exclusively in Japan. A single-player offline version of the original multiplayer title, Dragon Quest 10 Offline was first released in Japan in 2022 before making its way to other Asian regions. Currently, the base mobile port is available for a discounted price of 1,960 yen ($13), which will increase to 2,800 yen ($18) on January 28. Additionally, the expansion is available for only 1,920 yen ($12) until the aforementioned date. The offline version of the title features a more compact map and a simplified graphical style when compared to the original release.

Dragon Quest 10 Offline Gets Mobile Release in Japan

First released for the Nintendo Wii, Dragon Quest 10 was later ported to the Wii U, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo 3DS, and PC. The title features real-time combat and a complex job system, earning critical praise for its gameplay and ease of access for players less familiar with MMORPGs. In December 2024, a fan translation of Dragon Quest 10‘s story cutscenes was released, proving that demand was still high after over a decade of radio silence from Square Enix. In 2021, the Dragon Quest franchise celebrated its 35th anniversary, but those eager to try Dragon Quest 10 were disappointed when no announcements were made regarding a Western release of the title.

In Japan, the Dragon Quest franchise remains particularly popular, with the 2017 title Dragon Quest 11: Echoes of an Elusive Age selling two million physical copies in its first two days in the country. The next planned mainline title, Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate, will mark the first simultaneous worldwide release of a main series game, though no release window has been announced.
