Diablo 4 lead Rod Fergusson recently expressed his desire to focus on a larger narrative when it comes to developing updates going forward, stating that he wants to avoid singular stories going forward. While previous Diablo 4 seasons have given players smaller-scale stories to explore and uncover, this is seemingly set to change with future seasonal content. This news comes as players are on the cusp of entering another new Diablo 4 chapter, one that begins later this month.

Diablo 4 has received a steady stream of constant updates, gameplay overhauls, and quality-of-life improvements since its initial release in the summer of 2023, with the game currently in the midst of its Season 6 cycle. Season 6 brought a lot of changes to Diablo 4, being packaged alongside the game’s first full-fledged DLC pack. Titled Vessel of Hatred, Diablo 4‘s first expansion made several notable changes of its own, giving players Spiritborn a brand-new class to play as. Spiritborn quickly became one of the most overpowered classes in Diablo 4, though its time on top will likely end and be given to a new class. Season 6 is about to give way to Diablo 4‘s Season 7 cycle, one that the team says will mark a notable shift compared to other previous ones.

Diablo 4 had quite a strong 2024, but the new year brings an opportunity for the game to get ahead of its biggest competition.

While sharing details about Diablo 4‘s Season 7 update, general manager Rod Fergusson said that developers are focusing more on a wider narrative rather than bite-sized, individual stories. Past Diablo 4 updates have seen smaller narratives play out, but in an interview with Easy Allies, Fergusson says he wants to avoid isolated independent stories. “It became this full circle moment. We knew as we went in, it was really more about what’s the next thing as we lead into expansions. And, sometimes, expansions can go into isolated independent stories, and we thought it would be really cool if we could just continue that main story.”

Diablo 4 Focusing on Larger Narratives Going Forward

Those who played through Diablo 4‘s Vessel of Hatred expansion got to advance the main story following the events of the base game, something most seasonal content has avoided. Seasons 1 through 4 saw smaller-scale storylines and arcs play out. However, this approach changed with Season 5, which laid a foundation in preparation for Vessel of Hatred. The game’s Vessel of Hatred expansion will seemingly tie in with Season 7, with players uncovering what happened to Lilith’s cult and Mephisto during Diablo 4‘s Season 6.

This ambitious approach will continue with Diablo 4‘s next season. Officially titled Season of Witchcraft, Diablo 4‘s Season 7 will once again shake up the formula in a variety of ways. Season 7 will tell a new tale about a coven of witches, though Fergusson’s comments about a connected story imply this storyline will connect to Diablo 4‘s wider narrative.
