Once Human is one of the few 2024 survival games still going strong. The vibrant post apocalypse shooter is pulling in around 40,000 players at any one time, and developer Starry Studio continues listening to feedback while planning a huge 2025. This big year starts with a heavily player-requested feature, alongside some broader improvements to make it sing.
Once Human developer Starry Studio has finally given you the ability to swap the gender of your character in the game. Players have been requesting this feature for the free Steam game for some time, and after teasing its arrival late last year, the option is finally here. It’s not just the choice to swap genders either, as Starry Studio adds it has “body tweaks and action upgrades” as well.
To gender-swap your character in Once Human, you’ll first need to head to the in-game shop. Here you can buy a Metamorphosis Token, which you can use alongside a full-length mirror in your territory to access the character creation screen. You don’t need to worry about your outfits, either, as all of them will auto-adjust to your new look.
Your first Metamorphosis Token costs just one energy link, so you can easily change up your physical appearance without much worry. Starry Studio has also implemented an array of female character posture fixes, so now they should look in line with other models when standing around.
Starry Studio adds that character lighting has also been improved, alongside some outfit detail refinements as well. “With this update, in-game lighting is getting a serious upgrade” Starry Studio writes. “Whether you’re in a dimly lit room or standing against the light, your character will look flawless. Plus, we’ll keep improving lighting for that perfect 360-degree glow in any environment.”
The choice to change your character’s gender was teased by Starry Studio as part of the Once Human 2025 roadmap, which has a lot more to look forward to throughout the year. You can expect three new scenarios, custom servers, a secretive crossover event, and even the Once Human mobile version.
