An artistically gifted Pokemon TCG fan is catching the attention of plenty of fellow enthusiasts for their creative artwork of a Butterfree card. The distinctive art style, which showcases Butterfree evolving from Metapod – its previous form – serves as a unique interpretation of Butterfree’s evolutionary line, and is already amassing likes from thousands of Pokemon TCG fans within just hours of being posted.
Hailing from the original generation of Pokemon, Butterfree is a dual-type Bug/Flying Pokemon that many veteran Pokemon fans will instantly recognize. This is largely due to Butterfree’s significance in the Pokemon anime, with it being the first Pokemon Ash Ketchum ever catches, albeit when it was a Caterpie. Quickly evolving into a Metapod and eventually a Butterfree, the Pokemon was centered around one of the most emotionally poignant points of the show, also being the first that Ash set free. Fortunately, Ash reunites with Butterfree 25 years later near the show’s end.

What to Expect From Pokemon TCG in 2025
There will be quite a lot going for Pokemon TCG’s physical releases, with the first big set of the year being a couple of weeks away and more to come.
The impressive Pokemon TCG artwork comes from a Reddit user named _justsasss, who posted their remarkable card art to one of the site’s major Pokemon TCG pages. Featuring a purple-tinged landscape around either sunrise or sunset, Butterfree can be seen just left-of-center, seemingly flying away from a cocoon husk of a Metapod which, unlike the likes of a Pokemon such as Shedinja, does not become its own Pokemon. In fact, Pokemon lore seems to have Metapod directly transform into Butterfree, adding a degree of real-world insect metamorphosis.
Pokemon TCG fans appear to be flocking to the fan-made card, with the post garnering well over 4,000 upvotes at the time of writing, along with several hundred comments. Fans are lauding the featured concept of the piece, with one managing to point out Celebi in the distance, whose silhouette would’ve looked vastly different had Celebi’s original design stayed intact.
Gotta Card ’em All!
The Butterfree card should also be just the beginning for the Pokemon TCG fan, who in the comments states that they intend to create full-art cards for all 151 Pokemon of the first generation.
This isn’t the first time _justsasss has made headlines, with the same Pokemon TCG fan getting noticed for their creatively designed Poke Balls for Pokemon Scarlet and Violet‘s starters. Featuring overt design cues from Fuecoco, Sprigatito, and Quaxly, the designs were met with a strong fan response, but pale in comparison to the Butterfree card above. With artistic interest in both early Pokemon and in new ones, it should be interesting to see what this Pokemon TCG fan comes up with next.
