The contract that keeps Denji alive

A bond formed by two lonely individuals

Pochita has always been portrayed as a cute and affectionate dog like Chainsaw Devil. However, at heart, Pochita is a fearsome Devil who can consume and erase Devils, making him a terrifying foe many Devils have once lost their lives to in Hell. Although Pochita has many contradicting names, from the “Hero of Hell” to “the Devil that Devils fear most,” Pochita is shown to have a heart of gold.

Pochita and Denji’s first meeting was when Pochita escaped from Hell, reverting to a death-like state that portrayed him as a semi-harmless dog-like Devil. Though Denji had just been abandoned by all the adults in his life after his father’s death, Denji quickly saw an opportunity to make a contract with Pochita.

I ain’t runnin’ a charity though… This is a contract. I’ll help you… so now you gotta help me. I don’t wanna die either…

Since that pivotal day, Pochita and Denji have been an unbreakable duo, taking on numerous odd jobs and eventually entering the private Devil hunting sector to earn more money to settle the debts left by his father. During this journey, as they faced challenges to survive, their bond grew stronger than ever, relying solely on each other for companionship.

Since the start of the series, Pochita has been Denji’s number-one supporter. Although at the beginning, the two met and formed a contract under the means to save one another, over time, their bond grew, and they genuinely cared for one another. In Denji’s case, he did not have anyone besides Pochita to rely on, as he lived isolated from everyone. As for Pochita, he was a feared Devil in Hell, with many after his life; although he did have many fans, he was much too strong, and all he wished for “was to be hugged by somebody.”

After becoming Denji’s heart, whenever Denji becomes confused or struggles with a situation, Pochita always gives him motivating words or helps Denji devise a solution. At one point, As Denji had drunk Power’s blood, Pochita also tried to convince Power to lend a hand in assisting Denji in the battle with Makima. Overall, while Pochita lay dormant until times of need, it is possible that Pochita has always been watching Denji and thus wants to see more of Denji’s dreams.

It’d be nice if you could have a normal life and die a normal death. Fulfill my dreams for me.

It’s possible that there could be two meanings in the contract between Denji and Pochita. Pochita becomes Denji’s heart to keep him alive, thus helping him achieve all his dreams, regardless of what that may be. In addition, Denji wanted Pochita to live a normal life and fulfill his dreams in Denji’s absence. The two have worked together to make both of their wishes come true with this contract, as Pochita continues to motivate Denji, urging him to live the life he wants to live, and Denji allows Pochita to live through him.

Chainsaw Man: The Public Safety Devil Hunters, Explained

Devils have run rampant in Chainsaw Man, so there are sectors employing its citizens to dispatch them. But how does it work?

We also see this in the Control Devil arc, where Denji turns into the Chainsaw Devil, and Pochita tries to live as Denji would after saving Kobeni from her dilemma at work. While the two are an unlikely pair, as Devil’s would not often want to help humans without compensation, they continue to grow their bond, helping each other fulfill their dreams.

  • Pochita tried to prevent Denji from learning the truth behind his father’s death, not wanting to traumatize him.
  • When Denji and Nayuta’s home burns down, and Denji succeeds in living one of his dreams, Pochita reappears and asks Denji what he dreams of next.
  • Pochita made Denji barf up the Snow and Bitterness Devils to help Denji remember his deceased loved ones.

Throughout the series, Pochita has been consistent in helping Denji in whatever way he can. It’s also possible that Denji turning into the Chainsaw Devil was Pochita’s way of protecting Denji from the reality of seeing Nayuta’s decapitated head on the sushi conveyor belt. In this way, it’s possible that this was Pochita’s way of removing Denji from the reality that another one of his loved ones has died, considering that Denji did not fare well when Power and Aki died. In Chapter 183, we see Denji spiral into a depression, realizing every single person he has cared about has died. However, like before, Pochita once again motivates Denji to move on and continue living.

Chainsaw Man is now available to stream on Crunchyroll.
