Marvel Rivals’ director explains how to avoid the most annoying ult in the game

Even in Season 1, Jeff the Land Shark still has the most annoying ult in all of Marvel Rivals. If there’s a Jeff on your team, his ability to clear the objective is an absolute game-changer, but if he’s with the enemy, it feels like there’s never enough time to counter his ult before it wipes out half the squad. According to the creative director of Marvel Rivals, though, there’s actually a lot you can do to beat the ult, and it all starts with positioning.

I’ve been loving Marvel Rivals, but always feel a profound sense of dread whenever I realize the enemy team has a Jeff. He’s adorable, sure, but without proper awareness, his ult can cost you the match. That’s par for the course with many hero shooter-style multiplayer games, but if you struggle to get to grips with avoiding his big circular swallow, the game’s director has some advice.

“We actually have an interesting tip for how to avoid Jeff’s ultimate,” Marvel Rivals creative director Guangyun ‘guangguang’ Chen says in an interview with Metro. “Make sure you keep your formation spread out and as soon as you hear Jeff saying ‘Nom, Nom, Nom’ before he unleashes the ultimate, you want to scatter away. And don’t hesitate to use your Mobility skills if you need to.

“And, if you have a teammate or two who unfortunately gets swallowed by Jeff, and you’ve also done a good job spreading out your whole team beforehand, it means that only a few teammates will get caught.

“So, in that case, there’s still a chance to take him down and rescue your buddy before he drags them to the end of the map. It’s all about that teamwork and timing. Hitting all these specific timings will really help turn the tide.”

It’s also worth noting that with the arrival of Marvel Rivals Season 1, Jeff’s ult has been slightly changed. Instead of a ten-meter sphere around him, his ult is now a circle with a ten-meter radius and 5 five-meter high cylindrical field. This doesn’t change how you use his ult, but it’s good to be aware of if you’re on the enemy team and trying to avoid it.

As for ways to counter Jeff’s ult with the mobility skills of your Marvel Rivals character, you’ve got a lot of options. If you time using Groot’s walls, Punisher’s turret, Star Lord’s dodge, Psylocke’s ult, Magneto’s shield, and a plethora of other moves just right, you can avoid Jeff’s ult altogether. This is a last-ditch effort though, so I’d make sure you take Chen’s advice to heart when you realize you’re coming up against a Jeff.

Also, if you’re swallowing up the enemy team as Jeff, I’m begging you to check if you also caught any teammates in the ult as well. I’ve lost multiple matches when the Jeff on my team swallows me up and throws me off the map alongside the enemy, because there’s no one left to touch the objective and get us into overtime.
