Lunar Remastered Collection was announced during a Sony State of Play in 2024, surprising many JRPG fans of yesteryear. The series debuted in 1992 with Lunar: The Silver Star for the Sega CD, followed by a sequel in 1994 called Lunar: Eternal Blue. Both games received remakes for the PlayStation and Sega Saturn, titled Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete and Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete. To this day, Lunar is considered one of the best RPGs for the Sega Saturn, so seeing a collection that includes remastered versions of these classics is something many fans are excited about.

Other additions in the Lunar Remastered Collection include fully voiced dialogue in Japanese and English and newly added French and German subtitles. Regarding gameplay, the collection will feature a speed-up command for combat and new strategies to streamline party members for auto-battle. These quality-of-life features, designed to optimize or accelerate combat, have become standard in remasters and remakes of older JRPGs. For instance, Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake allows players to speed up its combat, and the upcoming Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster will also include a similar addition.
The Lunar series continues a trend of JRPGs from the past being given a new lease of life on modern platforms. It’s unclear whether the Lunar Remastered Collection will be monetarily successful. Still, considering that Game Arts and GungHo Online Entertainment previously collaborated to bring the Grandia HD Collection to modern platforms and are now repeating the formula with other series, those results may have been positive.
