Are we already seven seasons deep into Diablo 4? Jheez, time flies. Arriving next week, Diablo 4 Season 7 has just got its full reveal from Blizzard, and it looks like it could be one of the best seasonal updates the ARPG has received yet. Not only does its witchcraft theme introduce some of Diablo 4’s freakiest enemies, new powers, and a “murderous pet frog,” but Season 7 also adds the Armory, which may be the game’s most useful new feature to date.
The Tree of Whispers has lost its head(s) in Diablo 4, resulting in a legion of rogue heads wreaking havoc upon Sanctuary. In a new questline featuring three characters all adept in the art of witchcraft, it’s your job to harness the powers from these sorcerers, locate these heads in the new Headhunt activity, and slay the mutated monsters they become in order to return these dastardly decapitations back to the Tree. When the Diablo 4 Season 7 release date arrives, you’ll get access to four different types of witchcraft powers that are super flexible and able to work across any class in the game.
Full details on each of these witchcraft power groups aren’t available just yet, but here’s a summary. The Eldritch powers are all about slaying enemies with fire, burn, and shadow damage. The Psyche powers are more defensive, and harness the “mind, will, and soul” in order to protect you in battle. The Growth and Decay group of powers all revolve around chipping away at your enemies’ health while replenishing your own.
While these three divisions of witchcraft are learned from the three seasonal NPCs, the fourth is a totally unknown group of powers that you’ll unearth during your travels around Sanctuary. Known simply as Lost powers, the theme here is that they’re just cool as fuck – one example given in today’s reveal was the Piranhado which, as the name suggests, is a tornado of water and piranhas that sweeps across the battlefield, sucking enemies into a vortex of very hungry fish.
Across these new witchcraft powers, you’ll actually find some old abilities from Diablo 3 reimagined and brought into Diablo 4. Specifically, these are skills that used to be wielded by the Witch Doctor class. These include the Firebats and the toad-based skills that have been reworked into a new “murderous pet frog” that you can summon as a companion.
When embarking on the new Headhunt activity to find, defeat, and return some of the escaped heads, you’ll face some of the most harrowing enemies in the game to date. Known as Headrotten, these are existing monsters and enemy types that have essentially become the host to a parasitic head, making them much more powerful and much more disgusting to look at. These boss-like entities will feel like totally new encounters “you’ve never seen before,” according to Blizzard.
Away from the seasonal content itself, there is one other massive addition coming to Diablo 4 that every player should get excited for. The Armory is a brand new feature that lets you take snapshots of your current build and saves them for you to swap back to at any time. So, if you’ve got an absolute winner of a build but want to experiment with some new gear, for example, you can save your current build, do your experimentation, and if it doesn’t work out, swap back to the old build without having to manually recreate it.
Elsewhere, eight new Uniques and eight new legendary Affixes are being added for all players, and Vessel of Hatred owners will be getting a trio of new runes and over 15 updates to existing ones.
Diablo 4 Season of Witchcraft will arrive on Tuesday, January 21. Ahead of its arrival, why not take a look at some of the other amazing games like Diablo 4 that are out right now, or dive into one of our favorite RPGs.
