Summary
- Nintendo Switch 2 will reportedly finally be announced on Thursday, January 16.
- The Switch was also originally revealed on a Thursday back in 2016.
The Nintendo Switch 2 will be officially announced on January 16, a well-known and generally reliable leaker has said. Such an early 2025 reveal would increase the likelihood of Nintendo‘s next console hitting the store shelves in the first half of the year.
The Switch successor has long been Nintendo’s worst-kept secret. According to several prior reports, the Switch 2 started mass production around late September or early October 2024. These claims are reinforced by numerous hardware leaks that have been surfacing online since then. Nintendo, for its part, has twice now committed to officially announcing its next console no later than March 31, which is when its ongoing fiscal year is scheduled to conclude.

One of the rising stars among leakers shares an alleged image of a Nintendo Switch 2 dock, complete with a pair of polar bears.
The Japanese gaming giant will finally make good on that promise during the third week of January 2025, according to NateTheHate. During the January 13 episode of his podcast, the well-known leaker said that the Switch 2 will be revealed on Thursday, January 16, citing unnamed sources. This claim aligns with the long-standing trend of Thursdays generally being a prime time for Nintendo’s big announcements. For instance, the original Switch teaser from 2016 was shared on October 20, another Thursday.
Nintendo Switch 2 Has Already Leaked on All Fronts
It remains to be seen whether history will repeat itself in the sense that Nintendo will opt to do a small Switch 2 teaser on social media ahead of the console’s full-fledged reveal event, which is how it handled the official announcement of its 2017 device. Either way, the upcoming reveal event may not surprise the most attentive of fans, as the much-anticipated console has been leaking on all fronts for several months now. The volume of unofficial info about the device floating around has gotten so immense that Nintendo recently even commented on one Switch 2 replica in a rare instance of acknowledging product leaks in any capacity.
As a brief recap, the Switch 2 is rumored to be slightly larger than the Switch OLED Model, measuring 270 x 116 x 14mm and featuring an 8-inch LCD screen. Its Joy-Cons are expected to attach to the console magnetically, with the right controller reportedly including an additional “C” button below the home key. While the purpose of this button remains unclear, it may relate to the rumored mouse-like pointer mode that at least one of the Joy-Cons is expected to support.
Nintendo Switch 2 Launch Game Lineup Is Still a Mystery
The Switch 2 launch game lineup is a much bigger mystery than the device itself. RPGs My Time at Evershine and Bestiario are some of the rare titles that have already been confirmed for Nintendo’s upcoming console, but neither is expected to be available from day one, at least if the Switch successor hits the market in the first half of 2025. Nintendo will presumably aim to boost the console’s early momentum by offering at least one or two first-party heavy-hitters on day one.
