Star Wars Outlaws Gets More Bad Sales News

Summary

  • Star Wars Outlaws is being outsold by 2023’s Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.
  • Ubisoft’s stocks dropped sharply following the launch of Star Wars Outlaws in August 2024.
  • Players dislike the game’s combat and stealth mechanics.

In more bad news for Star Wars Outlaws, Ubisoft’s open-world title is reportedly being outsold by 2023’s Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. While early reviews for Star Wars Outlaws were largely positive when it launched last August, players have been less than thrilled about the game’s combat and stealth mechanics. Ubisoft would take note of those issues in later updates, but this sadly didn’t do much to placate those who disliked Star Wars Outlaws in the beginning.

This has resulted in poor financial sales for the first truly open-world Star Wars title, with Ubisoft itself admitting that the game ultimately fell short of its sales expectations back in September. Ubisoft’s stocks sharply dropped not too long after Star Wars Outlaws launched on August 27, 2024, fueling growing concerns about the publisher and triggering talks about taking the company private. Nonetheless, Ubisoft and developer Massive Entertainment have stayed optimistic that Star Wars Outlaws can bounce back thanks to its planned post-launch DLC.

The Star Wars Outlaws Brand Hopefully Won’t Face the Reaper

Star Wars Outlaws may not have made the waves Ubisoft intended it to, but the game’s core concept is too good to be left gathering dust.

Another blow to that hope recently came in the form of a report by VGC and former GamesIndustry.biz journalist Christopher Dring, who revealed that Star Wars Outlaws is not only underperforming overall, but is being outsold by 2023’s Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Respawn Entertainment’s single-player action sequel managed to sell more copies than Star Wars Outlaws, although no exact stats have been shared. In Europe, Star Wars Outlaws was recently ranked the 47th best-selling video game of 2024.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is Outselling Star Wars Outlaws

There are plenty of factors that might contribute to Star Wars Jedi: Survivor outperforming Star Wars Outlaws. The former is an established sequel to Respawn’s already successful Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, and was met with rave reviews when it launched in April 2023. Last year, EA and Respawn released an update for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor on PS4 and Xbox One, drumming up renewed interest in Cal Kestis’s latest adventure.

Meanwhile, Outlaws has struggled to find an audience, even as Massive Entertainment continues to roll out more Star Wars Outlaws update patches and story DLC. The first of these expansions, Star War Outlaws: Wild Card, was released in November and saw Kay Vess join forces with Lando Calrissian. A second DLC storyline titled Star Wars Outlaws: A Pirate’s Fortune is set to launch sometime in Spring 2025 and will see the return of fan-favorite Star Wars: The Clone Wars character Hondo Ohnaka.
