Sonic 3 Just Did An Extremely Rare Thing At The Box Office

After another successful weekend in theaters, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has now crossed a major commercial milestone that puts the movie in an exclusive club.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has now earned more than $200 million from the domestic market, becoming just the second video game movie ever, joining The Super Mario Bros. Movie, to reach that mark.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has earned $204.5 million from the domestic market and $180 million from international territories for a total of $385 million worldwide. The Super Mario Bros. Movie, meanwhile, banked $575 million at the domestic box office and $786 million from international markets for a total of $1.36 billion globally.

No other video game movie has reached $200 million domestic. The next closest was Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which earned $191 million from the domestic market back in 2022.

In terms of total global box office numbers, The Super Mario Bros. Movie is far and away the biggest video game movie ever, bringing in $1.36 billion globally. 2019’s Pokemon Detective Pikachu is No. 2 all time with $450 million worldwide, which is less than half of what The Super Mario Bros. Movie made.

There are a number of video game movies coming up in 2025, including A Minecraft Movie (April 4), Until Dawn (April 25), Mortal Kombat 2 (October 24), and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 (December 5).

As for the Sonic movie series, it’s now earned more than $1 billion across three films. The series will continue with a fourth Sonic movie, which is set for release in 2027.
