Wizards of the Coast has announced a change coming to how it distributes certain cards in Magic: The Gathering‘s Secret Lair series. As part of an upcoming test, you will be able to get mechanically unique Secret Lair cards outside of the Secret Lair website.
As explained in a new blog post, this will work by allowing Wizards Play Networks stores to sell these Secret Lari cards themselves. In practice, this means that Wizards will make a “limited quantity” of unique card drops available to stores, so there’s another avenue to getting them other than the website, or waiting for reprints.
Wizards Is Testing Out A New Way To Distribute Certain Secret Lair Cards
“Most Secret Lair cards are reprints, but sometimes, we create mechanically unique cards,” the blog post explains. “We’ve heard from fans that they would like more ways to access those cards beyond the Secret Lair website. Historically we’ve addressed this through the “SLX” program, landing on in-Multiverse reskins in The List.
“However, The List is gone, so we’re trying a different approach – letting Wizards Play Networks sell them directly to you.”
Of course, this might not necessarily help with the issue of there not being enough stock for all the fans who want these cards. But at the very least, if they run out online before you can pick them up, you can try going to your local store and see if they have any. The supplies will still be limited, but it means you have a backup.
It also doesn’t seem that this will be backdated, meaning we’re still waiting for the mechanically unique cards from the Doctor Who and Tomb Raider drops. That said, this new method of distribution is just a test at this point.

“Finding the best ways to get mechanically unique drops into the hands of players who want them is something that’s important to us, and we’re excited to try this new approach,” the post reads. “We’re going to be watching this test closely and talking to fans and WPN stores to make sure we’re doing this right.”
We’ll have to wait and see how this goes down, and if it means fewer fans are disappointed during these drops.
