Summary
- Marvel Rivals players have already found a workaround for the mod ban NetEase rolled out last week.
- Mister Fantastic has been turned into Gear 5 Luffy from One Piece thanks to modders.
- Modding in Rivals is now harder to do, and it might result in bans if you get caught using them.
Marvel Rivals is a popular game you can play on PC which inevitably means within days of its release at the end of last year, mods for it started to appear. Most of those mods added non-Marvel characters to the game, but NetEase kicked off the new season last week by adding an update that renders all mods obsolete. That was until someone immediately discovered a workaround and One Piece‘s Luffy was added to the game.
NetEase added the mod restriction to kick off season one, noting to IGN that modding Marvel Rivals breaches the game’s terms and conditions and that those using them run the risk of getting banned from the hero shooter. That clearly hasn’t deterred some modders who must have gotten right to work on finding a workaround as soon as it became clear measures had been taken to try and make sure Rivals modding was left behind with season zero.

The mod that has been doing the rounds during season one’s opening weekend turns new roster addition Mister Fantastic into Gear 5 Luffy from One Piece. Before you can turn the stretchy Marvel character into the stretchy One Piece lead, however, you need to download the workaround mod that circumvents the restrictions NetEase has put in place to try and stop this kind of thing.
Marvel Rivals Modders Have Already Squeezed Past NetEase’s Anti-Mod Efforts
Mister Fantastic Is Now Luffy If You Want Him To Be
Prafit uploaded the workaround, which has been labeled a temporary solution, on Nexus Mods and notes that those who choose to download and use it are doing so at their own risk. NetEase has threatened bans, and while there is no evidence of someone being banned for mod use in Marvel Rivals at this moment in time, it clearly intends to boot anyone from the game who doesn’t heed this very clear warning.
Ercuallo’s Luffy mod has already been downloaded more than 5,000 times so clearly quite a few of you aren’t phased about potentially being banned. That is a very small fraction of Rivals’ PC audience, though. Not only did the Overwatch-inspired Marvel game break its concurrent player record on Steam over the weekend, but it was the most-played game on the platform at one point with more than 600,000 of you in-game.
It’s unclear if prior mods will work again with the Nexus Mods workaround applied or if those are now defunct thanks to NetEase’s anti-mod update. Some of the more popular mods included one that turns characters into their DC equivalents, and another that added Sora and Riku from Kingdom Hearts to the game.
