Summary
- Bosch: Legacy is a new show that wasn’t ready to end after just 3 seasons, with story arcs still ongoing.
- Amazon treated Bosch and Bosch: Legacy as the same show to reduce costs, affecting the main cast and storylines.
- The cancelation of Bosch: Legacy jeopardizes the future of the expanded universe, impacting potential spin-offs and character development.
Bosch: Legacy was canceled by Amazon after only three seasons on Freevee. Harry Bosch has been on television screens for over a decade, with the original Bosch series running for seven successful seasons. There is a temptation to refer to Bosch: Legacy as a long-running show, but it is very much its own entity and should be treated that way.
There seems to be an attitude of 10 years being a good run, and fans should be happy with that. However, Bosch: Legacy is a different show to its predecessor, with new characters introduced while Maddie Bosch and Honey Chandler were elevated to co-leads alongside Harry Bosch. The character arcs in Bosch: Legacy are far from being completed, and this is a show that has very much been canceled prematurely.

Most shows don’t run for anything close to ten seasons, and if they do, the quality usually dwindles as the seasons go on. Collectively, Bosch and Bosch: Legacy have maintained a high standard of storytelling, so it was a shock when the latter show was canceled. Due to Harry Bosch being the main lead in both shows, they are often classed as one and the same. This isn’t necessarily incorrect on the surface, as story arcs are carried over from the original series. However, it’s important to remember that Bosch and Bosch: Legacy are still essentially different shows. Harry Bosch is seen as an equal co-lead with Chandler and Maddie in Bosch: Legacy, and the spin-off also introduces new characters like Maurice ‘Mo’ Bassi and Reina Vasquez.
Everybody Counts Or Nobody Counts
Bosch: Legacy‘s cancelation should not be considered justified on the basis of Harry Bosch’s solo stories ending after 10 long seasons. No, the upcoming season is only the third outing of Bosch’s post LAPD storyline, and the creative team were just getting started with this particular part of his arc, while also developing the supporting characters’ stories. Basically, this isn’t Bosch season 10. The majority of the characters from the original series are gone, aside from sporadic guest appearances by Crate and Barrel and Jerry Edgar, among others. The vibe is different, while still capturing the main essence of what fans loved about the original Bosch series.

Amazon Are Treating Bosch And Bosch: Legacy As One Long Running Show For One Very Simple Reason
Amazon clearly treated Bosch and Bosch: Legacy as the same show, but the creative team and the majority of the fans certainly don’t see it that way. Let’s try and delve into Amazon’s mindset to figure out why they would approach it this way. Spoiler alert: it probably has something to do with saving money. Bosch ran for seven successful seasons between 2014 and 2021 until Amazon decided they’d invested enough money in it. Every additional season of a show is more expensive to make than the previous one, with the pay grade going up for the core cast. However, if one show ends, and a ‘new’ one starts, it’s back to square one in terms of cost. The majority of the main Bosch cast were let go and/or relegated to guest spots in Bosch: Legacy, and the pay scale was reset. New and cheaper-to-pay actors were introduced, while Titus Welliver, Mimi Rogers and Madison Lintz essentially signed up for a brand-new show. In Amazon’s eyes, Bosch and Bosch: Legacy are the same show, but they were just using a loophole to reduce the cost of making it.
Bosch: Legacy has been a massive success, but this comes with one big caveat for Amazon: the more successful it is, the more expensive it is to make. The main cast demand more money, while the price of shooting in Los Angeles has gone up significantly. Amazon’s overpaid problem solvers had the answer: create a new show based on cold case investigator, Renee Ballard, and persuade Titus Welliver to sign a contract to guest star in just three episodes, while he believes he’ll continue in future seasons of Bosch: Legacy. However, they pulled the rug from under Welliver’s feet, along with his co-stars, and canceled Bosch: Legacy, and nixed Michael Connelly’s expanded universe. Amazon were actually never trying to expand the Bosch-verse at all, they were trying to find the cheapest way of continuing what they considered to be a long-running show that started way back in 2014. The creative team will treat the Ballard spin off as its own thing, but if Amazon approaches it similarly to Bosch: Legacy, it will be canceled before it has a chance to expand on its success. Harry Bosch and Renee Ballard will probably be transferred to a revived Jerry Edgar spin-off, or even worse, Amazon will wash their hands of the Bosch-verse altogether.
