With Xbox‘s third-annual Developer Direct set to go live next week, an industry insider has speculated about what the fourth mystery game might be. Xbox‘s Developer Directs began in January 2023 and provided a platform for some of its studios’ developers to speak directly to Xbox fans about their upcoming games. Tango Gameworks’ hugely praised Hi-Fi Rush was famously shadow-dropped after the very first Developer Direct, giving the show a can’t-miss reputation. Last January’s Direct saw Xbox spill details on Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, and even featured an appearance from Square Enix, which showed off Visions of Mana.
Like clockwork, Xbox is back again with its third Developer Direct, going live next Thursday, January 23. Xbox has confirmed three 2025 games that fans can expect to see and learn more about: Doom: The Dark Ages, South of Midnight, and Sandfall Interactive’s impressive-looking turn-based RPG, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. Additionally, Xbox confirmed that a mystery fourth game will be revealed at the show, but didn’t divulge any further info. Since the event’s announcement, Xbox fans have been speculating about what that fourth game could be, with some hoping for Fable, The Outer Worlds 2, or even Gears of War: E-Day.

Xbox Developer Direct Mystery Game Could Be a New Entry in a Legendary Japanese Franchise
Since Square Enix had already shown up at last year’s Direct with Visions of Mana, it would be easy to imagine Square appearing once more, this time perhaps with a new Final Fantasy game. However, considering Square is still partnered with PlayStation for Final Fantasy, and there won’t be another mainline FF or FF7 remake for quite a while with two major games having recently been released, Square seems very unlikely.
Franchises like Capcom’s Resident Evil and Sega’s Persona also come to mind. Although new Resident Evil games have traditionally been revealed at PlayStation events, Resident Evil 9 has reportedly been gestating for quite some time and seems ripe for a reveal. As for Persona, Xbox did partner with Sega for Metaphor: ReFantazio‘s marketing, and considering Persona 6 has been rumored for a 2025 release, an appearance at Xbox’s Developer Direct would be massive. There’s also the possibility of a new Ninja Gaiden game from Team Ninja. Considering how closely tied to Xbox the franchise was during the original Xbox generation, it wouldn’t be too surprising to see Xbox teaming up with Team Ninja once more for a Ninja Gaiden revival.
While all these possibilities are incredibly exciting, it’s all merely speculation. Fans should tune in to Xbox’s Developer Direct on Thursday, January 23, to learn more about Compulsion Games’ South of Midnight, Doom: The Dark Ages, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and to find out about this mysterious fourth game.
