Helldivers Movie: Studio Boss Says "We Don't, And Shouldn't, Have Final Say"

A Helldivers movie is now in development, and the studio behind the game, Arrowhead, aims to be involved with the film. However, Arrowhead boss Johan Pilestedt said the studio isn’t well-versed in movie-making, and will allow those with the expertise to do the heavy lifting.

Asked if Arrowhead will be involved in the movie, Pilestedt told a fan, “The short answer is yes. The long answer is that we’ll see.”

He added: “We are not Hollywood people, and we don’t know what it takes to make a movie. And therefore we don’t, and shouldn’t, have final say.”

Video game movies don’t have the best track record when it comes to quality. Some of the films that have succeeded the most, including 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, were created in partnership with the game developers themselves. Sony, which owns the Helldivers IP, is also an established movie studio through Sony Pictures and its subsidiaries, including Columbia Pictures and others.

A Helldivers movie was announced during Sony’s Consumer Electronics Show event earlier this month, with Sony also confirming a Horizon Zero Dawn film. Another Sony franchise, Until Dawn, is getting a movie of its own as well.

It’s still early days for the Helldivers movie, and there is no word yet about the cast, director, or release date. The same is true for the Horizon Zero Dawn film. As for Until Dawn, though, it wrapped filming in 2024 and is coming out this April, with Peter Stormare returning from the game.
