Godfall Developer May Have Shut Down

Godfall Developer May Have Shut Down

Summary

  • Counterplay Games, the studio behind Godfall, may have shut down.
  • A LinkedIn post made by an employee from another studio indicates that Counterplay Games has ‘disbanded.’
  • Godfall struggled to find a player base, with many frustrated by its repetitive gameplay and lackluster story.

Counterplay Games, the developer behind Godfall, may have quietly shut down, according to the LinkedIn profile of an employee from another studio. The company has been quiet since the release of its loot-heavy hack-and-slash PS5 launch title, making no game announcements since the 2020 title. Now it seems that the studio may be no more, as the Godfall developers seem to have disbanded.

Despite being the first title announced for the PlayStation 5, Counterplay’s lone title never made much of an impression on gamers. Even following a massive update in 2021, Godfall suffered from repetitive gameplay and a story that largely fell flat. As such, it didn’t sell well and struggled to maintain a significant player base. Its reception wasn’t entirely negative, but its poor overall performance may have been too much for its studio to withstand.

Babylon’s Fall Suffered From the Same Issues as Godfall

Both attempting to bring loot-based progression to melee action games, Babylon’s Fall and Godfall are disappointing due to similar shortcomings.

The news of the developer’s shutdown comes from a LinkedIn post made by an employee of Jackalyptic Games and shared by PlayStation Lifestyle. According to the note, Jackalyptic was collaborating with Counterplay on a new title, but the project didn’t make it to 2025 and Counterplay Games subsequently “disbanded.” Counterplay has yet to make any statement on the topic, but the wording of the post makes it seem like it would’ve been a relatively recent event, with the developer possibly disbanding around the end of 2024. It’s also worth noting that Counterplay hasn’t revealed much since bringing Godfall to Xbox on April 7, 2022, so a silent disbandment isn’t necessarily shocking.

Counterplay Games May Be the Latest in a String of Studio Shutdowns

If the news is true, Counterplay Studios will be another statistic in a recent and unfortunate trend in the gaming industry. Sony infamously shut down Firewalk Studios after taking Concord offline mere weeks after its September 2024 release. In October of the same year, Sony shuttered mobile developer Neon Koi to focus its resources on better-performing games. Unlike those studios, Counterplay Games’ end would not come at the hands of a larger parent company, but it would still signify how difficult it can be to stay afloat in today’s environment.

Games have become increasingly expensive to make and face higher demands from players and shareholders alike, with many needing to make a splash in an already packed market. This can be a tall order, especially for a smaller indie studio without the resources of a bigger corporation. Even highly anticipated titles aren’t guaranteed success, as Frostpunk developer 11 Bit Studios announced layoffs in late 2024 amid profitability concerns. It’s unclear what the exact cause behind Counterplay’s reported end is, but similar challenges may have played a role. The studio hasn’t provided an official statement, and fans are advised to wait for more information. For now, though, the future doesn’t look bright for Godfall fans or players looking forward to potential Counterplay releases down the line.
