As horror fans continue to come up with theories about Ghostface and their victims in Scream 7, news continues to come out about the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel.
According to Bloody Disgusting, Prinze Jr. said that the new characters are the main focus of the legacy sequel. He told David Miniatures on the Scale Talk Podcast that his character Ray Bronson and Ray’s love interest Julie James (Jennifer Love Hewitt) aren’t at the center of the story. He also praised writer/director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, whose credits include Do Revenge and Someone Great.

Prinze Jr. said:
“They’re not the leads of the movie by any stretch of the imagination. “[Kaytin Robinson] made them such a powerful pushing forward of the other cast. It’s not like, ‘Oh, here’s the Ray and Julie movie that we deserve.’ That doesn’t even make sense. That guy’s dead. So it has to be new generation. And the way she sort of laces us in there with them is just beautifully done. The script is wonderfully written.”
I Know What You Did Last Summer‘s legacy sequel cast members include Nicolas Alexander Chavez, Austin Nicols, Gabbriette, and Lola Tung along with Chase Sui Wonders, Sarah Pidgeon, Madelyn Cline, and Jonah Hauer-King. Although it’s unclear which characters these new cast members are playing, Prinze Jr. suggested that they are the ones who the killer is chasing. It’s also possible that one of these actors is playing the villain. No one is sure if Ben Willis will be the killer once again or if a new villain will be working on his behalf. Since friendship was always a big theme of the original I Know What You Did Last Summer movie, which was released in 1997, it’s easy to assume that a new friend group will be at the heart of the new film.
Even though Julie and Ray won’t be the focus, it sounds like the I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel honors the past movies and does a great job with Ray’s character. Fans hope to learn where the couple has been all these years and how they plan to deal with the fact that the killer is back. It’s always tricky to balance the new and old characters in a slasher or horror sequel. Fans love the nostalgic factor of the older characters, but they also have high hopes and expectations for the newer additions. Although Julie is a final girl, there will most likely be a new character who is a smart example of that classic and iconic trope.
Ever since the legacy sequel was announced a while back, there have been a few fun updates, from casting news to the first image of the iconic hook. I Know What You Did Last Summer’s sequel will be in theaters on July 18th, 2025.
