Dandadan Anime Has Exceeded Expectations, Says Shonen Jump Editor

Summary

  • Dandadan exceeded production team’s expectations and became a top anime hit of 2024.
  • A second season is confirmed for July 2025, with a tighter release date to be announced.
  • Dandadan outperformed Dragon Ball Daima on Netflix, but its performance on Crunchyroll remains uncertain.

Dandadan is undeniably one of the biggest anime hits of 2024, and has exceeded the production team’s expectations. With such a positive response from the public, a second season has already been announced and set for July 2025, but a tighter release date should be informed in the upcoming months.

While Dandadan has been one of Shonen Jump’s recent hits, probably no one was expecting the anime to gain so much spotlight, especially when releasing in a season featuring Dragon Ball Daima, the last Dragon Ball anime with Akira Toriyama’s signature. But the series could be easily considered the biggest Fall 2024 TV anime hit.

Dandadan: What to Expect from Season 2 (According to the Manga)

Now that the critically acclaimed first season of Dandadan is all wrapped up, what can fans expect for Momo and Okarun in Season 2?

When we say that probably no one was expecting it to become such a hit, we really mean it: according to Shihei Lin, a Jump+ editor, not even the production team was expecting it to be so successful. Despite the careful planning of the series, it has exceeded any expectations. As a Jump+ editor, Lin manages Dandadan and is credited in the anime as Original Work Managing Editor Producer, according to ANN.

He wrote about in a long post on X (formerly Twitter), addressing many titles he manages on Jump+:

His statement regarding Dandadan is something like this:

Also, after careful planning and discussions, Dandadan began airing worldwide in October 2024, and has reached top 1 on many streaming services. ✨ Thankfully, we had to reprint the series in large quantities. Many people enjoyed the series around the world, even more than the production team expected. The second cour is slated to air next year, so we’ll be working hard to make sure everyone keeps enjoying it.

Sadly, he didn’t reveal anything about what the expectations were, as this kind of information is usually confidential and hardly shared.

Dandadan Performance’s on Netflix

Dandadan also helped position Netflix as a promising place for anime fans. Actually, at least on Netflix, Dandadan became more popular than Dragon Ball Daima, and was featured among the top 3 most watched Non-English shows on the service for many weeks.

In its debut week, Dandadan ranked #2. While it has never topped the chart, it kept in 2nd-3rd positions for five weeks, then started declining, but it was still able to keep itself in positions from 4th to 6th. It stayed in the top 10 during all weeks in which new episodes dropped.

Dandadan Performance’s on Crunchyroll

Crunchyroll doesn’t most watched shows like Netflix does, so we don’t have any official data on how popular Dandadan is on the service. However, according to a Bloomberg‘s report, the marketing team was instructed by the head of marketing not to promote the show, which have upset Toho’s executives. While this may not be enough to keep subscribers away from the show on the service, it might have its performance significantly affected.

Dandadan is streaming on Netflix and Crunchyroll, dubbed and subbed in English (dubs are different across the services).
