Charlie Cox Explains The Time Gap Between the Netflix Era & Daredevil: Born Again

Summary

  • Daredevil: Born Again brings a gritty, violent vibe to the MCU along with a time jump and character growth.
  • Fans will see Daredevil post-Endgame, balancing heroic exploits and Matt Murdock’s quest for justice.
  • The show premieres on Disney+ on March 4, 2025, ready to explore these beloved characters in the MCU.

Daredevil: Born Again has a lot to live up to when it finally hits streaming on Disney+ in March, and part of the show’s Marvel Cinematic Universe storyline will explore how the Man Without Fear has grown since, according to the man behind the mask.

Daredevil: Born Again has given fans of the MCU a glimpse at the franchise’s potential for new and interesting stories at a time when others are contemplating how the MCU could end, in no small part due to the current apathy stemming from franchise fatigue and the perceived fall in quality post-Endgame. Bringing in a more grounded, street-level vibe to the multiverse-spanning MCU franchise alongside what leading man Charlie Cox and other castmembers have promised will be an even grittier and more violent product than Netflix’s original Daredevil makes Born Again the most exciting thing coming to Disney+ anytime soon.

Making the jump to the MCU didn’t come without some costs, as its been confirmed that Cox and the gang will be placed 5 years down the timestream. Recently, Daredevil: Born Again star Wilson Bethel touched on the reboot show’s timeline and how he was choosing to approach his return as Bullseye to reflect that, and now the show’s main man has weighed in as well. Speaking at the Scotland Comic Con event, Daredevil: Born Again headliner Cox discussed how the writer’s decisions came across to him on the events that fans weren’t privy to. “Essentially, it’s the same character,” Cox said, as reported by Popverse. “What the writers have done was they’ve written quite a big time jump. From when we finish in 2018 to where we pick up in Born Again, there’s a bit of a time jump. I had long conversations with them about what’s happened in between, other than what we know.”

While fans have seen Daredevil cameo alongside Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and a saucy jaunt on She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, the bulk of the reported five-year time skip is still a mystery. “We know he went to LA and had a fling with She-Hulk, and we know that there was some Spider-Man stuff,” Cox reiterates. “-but then obviously, you have to use your imagination to figure out what’s been going on in his life, what’s been happening in New York, and kind of incorporate those experiences into who the character is when we met him at the beginning of the new season. Essentially, he’s the same guy. He looks very similar to the old character, a little bit older.” Fans can see the advanced age in the leaked trailer for Daredevil: Born Again, with the characters looking and carrying themselves differently in the new footage.

Daredevil: Born Again has become a far bigger deal than when it was initially announced, and that means that the character’s growth and changes will be essential going forward. It’s been hot gossip for months that the franchise has big plans for Cox’s Daredevil, a major MCU rumour that was recently substantiated in a rather humorous way via a well-intentioned post on Instagram. With that looming responsibility, the show has to know things out of the park, and Cox has to bring a performance that feels like it’s lived through the events of the MCU and has grown tough enough to belong on its bigger stage. These heroic exploits also have to balance against the life of Cox’s Matt Murdock, as the dual identity and the character’s quest for Justice in both guises was a core appeal of the original show.

Daredevil: Born Again has certainly earned its headline spot on the list of the most exciting projects releasing in 2025, and the way that beloved characters have morphed and changed over this time skip will be a vital part of the payoff. Fans can only really wait and see how the show plays out and represents this character development across the board and what the main character goes on to do in the wider franchise.

Daredevil: Born Again is currently set to premiere on Disney+ on March 4, 2025
