Summary
- Baldur’s Gate 3 fans have been fantasy-casting a 1980s adaptation of the game.
- Everyone agrees David Bowie would have played Astarion, but there’s a debate over who should be Shadowheart.
- While some think Sigourney Weaver would have fit the role, others think Winona Ryder would have been better suited.
Video game adaptations are hot right now with what feels like every series getting either the TV or movie treatment. Only a decade ago, studios hadn’t figured out the secret formula for a good video game movie. Going back to the 1980s, they weren’t a thing at all. That hasn’t stopped Baldur’s Gate 3 fans fantasy casting a movie about the game had it been released 40 years ago, though.
Reddit user deadbassist kicked off the conversation on the Baldur’s Gate 3 subreddit by sharing ’80s-era images of the iconic actors they’d cast as each character. Sigourney Weaver is their Shadowheart, Will is Wesley Snipes, and a rather fetching, but very ’80s, photo of Tom Selleck has been used to demonstrate why he would have passed for Halsin had Baldur’s Gate 3 been a movie in 1983 rather than a game in 2023.

While the post has generated some heated discussions in the replies, the one bit of fan casting everyone seems to agree on is David Bowie as Astarion. In fact, OP notes that their post was inspired by another that highlighted how good an Astarion Bowie would have been. They used the same photo from that original post in which the pop music icon looks like he’s had a headshot taken specifically for a 1980s Baldur’s Gate 3 movie audition.
Neil Newbon, the talented voice actor behind Astarion, has called his character Bowee in his own Baldur’s Gate 3 playthrough, suggesting he too may agree that the character he plays has shades of Bowie.
Who Should Play Shadowheart?
Sigourney Weaver Or Winona Ryder?
The original post suggests that Winona Ryder plays Minthara. However, one of the heated debates in the replies is over whether the OP has got Ryder and Weaver’s roles the wrong way around. While I agree that Ryder might make a better Shadowheart than Weaver, the period we’re talking about might have been a stumbling block. Ryder was a teenager in the 1980s meaning she probably would have been better suited for a role in a hypothetical 1990s Baldur’s Gate 3 film.
Other than some very flimsy rumors shortly after it launched, there has been no suggestion that Baldur’s Gate 3 is up for the adaptation treatment. The rate at which big games are being picked up by Hollywood and various TV studios, it might be in the minority. PlayStation added to the growing pile of video game adaptations in the works this week by revealing Horizon Zero Dawn and Helldivers 2 movies are on the way, as well as a Ghost Of Tsushima movie coming to Crunchyroll in 2027.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is the long-awaited next chapter in the Dungeons & Dragons-based series of RPGs. Developed by Divinity creator Larian Studios, it puts you in the middle of a mind flayer invasion of Faerûn, over a century after the events of its predecessor.
