Baldur’s Gate 3 is fast approaching its last major update after two years, which means that creative director Swen Vincke — and much of Larian Studios — is now solely focused on its next project.

“It really has been an incredible journey so far,” Vincke tweeted, responding to a video about Larian Studios’ history and how it went from near bankruptcy to launching one of the most critically acclaimed RPGs in the medium’s history (as reported by VideoGamer). “Stay tuned. Going to try to skip the dark night of the soul moment though if you don’t mind.”
We don’t know what Larian has in store for us, but it revealed in July 2024 that its new game was about to “lift off”, and that the early stages of development had just begun. All we know at the moment is that it’s not another Dungeons & Dragons game, as Larian seeks to “develop [its] own IPs”. Perhaps it’s an entirely new series, a Divinity: Original Sin 2 sequel, or even both.
Larian Studios Has Two Games In Development
Larian Studios actually has two games in development right now, which is why it opened a seventh studio in Warsaw, Poland last year. All Larian has said of these two games so far is that they are “very ambitious RPGs”, and that fans should “let [them] cook”. Their settings, stories, or whether they’ll launch in early access like Larian’s last two games, all remains a mystery.
There’s no word on when we can expect to find out more, but Larian did tell VideoGamer that it has entered a “media blackout” as its “full attention is focused” on its next game. So, don’t expect an update any time soon. In fact, Vincke replied to his tweet that he’s “pretty sure someone else is working on the next rung of the infinite ladder of RPG dev” in the meantime.
Baldur’s Gate 3 is the long-awaited next chapter in the Dungeons & Dragons-based series of RPGs. Developed by Divinity creator Larian Studios, it puts you in the middle of a mind flayer invasion of Faerûn, over a century after the events of its predecessor.
