At this point in the story, during the events of One Piece’s Sabaody Archipelago Arc, the Straw Hat Crew was separated by Bartholomew Kuma. Although fans would later learn that this was a good thing, at the time, this event left Luffy desperate and alone, removing his crew mates who helped cover for all his weaknesses. Although he meets new allies along the way, without the rest of the Straw Hat Crew, Luffy definitely struggles more than he would with them.

Now, imagine if, by some miracle, the rest of the Straw Hats met up with Luffy after the events of One Piece’s Impel Down Arc, and joined Luffy for his entrance at Marineford. How much would the inclusion of the Straw Hats affect the overall flow of the battle? Would having the rest of the Straw Hats turn the conflict into a victory for Whitebeard? Considering their strength at the time, however, it’s hard to say that much would have changed if the rest of the Straw Hats were present.

During the Paramount War in One Piece, many times, despite his courage and bravery, Luffy felt more like a hindrance than a help. Although he inspired many of the pirates to keep fighting against the Marines, against any opponent stronger than a Vice Admiral, Luffy needed a lot of assistance. More often than not, many characters had to come in and save Luffy from the destructive power of the Warlords and Admirals. Even with their help and Ace, an extremely powerful pirate, sacrificing himself, Luffy still suffered a near-fatal injury.

At this time, Luffy was very obviously the strongest member of the Straw Hat Crew. Although most of the members were decently strong, Luffy was a good deal more powerful than the rest, as is evident by how much better he fared on Sabaody than many of the others. With the Straw Hats on Marineford, this would just place many more relatively weak pirates on the island that would just require more protection, leading to far more distractions.

Additionally, although the Straw Hats would be able on the lesser troops of the Marines, the ground soldiers aren’t what won the Navy this battle. The overwhelming power of characters like the Navy Admirals, Akainu, Kizaru, Aokiji, and Blackbeard – despite not being on the Navy’s side – are the kinds of characters that led to their victory. In many ways, it wouldn’t matter if the Straw Hats were able to wipe out most of the ground forces on Marineford. If they couldn’t take out a larger threat, like a Warlord or Admiral, their presence largely wouldn’t matter.
War May Be Too Chaotic For The Straw Hats To Work Together

However, that being said, the Straw Hat crew have been known to overcome incredible odds with proper teamwork and planning. Sadly, the chaotic nature of war would most likely be too much for even the Straw Hats to overcome. If the battle took place after their post-time skip training, then they might fare a bit better. However, as they were at the time of Marineford, the Straw Hats would hinder more than they helped.

In the end, although it would have been great to see the Straw Hats supporting Luffy during One Piece’s Marineford Arc, the War of the Best would have been far too dangerous for the rooky pirate crew. In fact, this event was a catalyst for Luffy, allowing him to understand just how much power he needed to survive in the New World. If this event was far too much for the strongest member of the Straw Hat Crew in One Piece, it’s safe to say that it would have been too much for the others as well.
