2025 is primed to be a massive year for the gaming industry, and Hollow Knight: Silksong has the potential to be an integral part of this roster. Unfortunately, the prolonged development of Hollow Knight: Silksong may be a wake-up call, for better or for worse. The sequel was initially slated for release in early 2023, but was later delayed indefinitely.
Considering that Hollow Knight: Silksong was announced in 2019, nearly six years ago, fans are hoping for any news to tide them over during the prolonged wait period. 2023 and 2024 passed without any major updates, but to say that no information was gleaned would be false. Still, based on the past patterns Team Cherry has displayed and the game’s extended production time, it’s possible – but far from guaranteed – that Silksong will debut this year.

Sliksong is likable enough, but Team Cherry’s positioning of her as a proper protagonist in Hollow Knight: Silksong comes with some unique challenges.

Team Cherry Has Gone Radio Silent Regarding Silksong, But There May Be A Reason
With no news regarding Hollow Knight: Silksong at The Game Awards 2024, it’s possible Team Cherry is postponing information to align with the debut of the Nintendo Switch 2. Though Nintendo recently commented on the Nintendo Switch 2 leaks, claiming that the models shown at CES 20245 are not official, this doesn’t rule out the possibility of the next-gen console releasing soon. Rumors suggest the Nintendo Switch 2 could launch in March or April, potentially giving Team Cherry time to fine-tune Hollow Knight: Silksong for release around the same period.
The original Hollow Knight sold over 250,000 copies in just two weeks after its launch on the Nintendo Switch in 2018. As such, it would make sense if Nintendo wanted to partner with Team Cherry to secure the sequel as a day-one launch title. Alternatively, launching the game within a few months of the Nintendo Switch 2’s debut would allow it to be optimized for higher-end performance. This seems more likely than Nintendo trying to secure an indie title as a launch game, especially since it’s already confirmed for Xbox Game Pass.
Hollow Knight has sold a total of over 3 million copies on all platforms as of December 2020.
Even if Hollow Knight: Silksong isn’t part of the Nintendo Switch 2’s early lineup, which may include AAA games, Team Cherry is likely biding its time for a proper update. With the kingdom of Pharloom expected to be massive, featuring at least 165 enemies and over 100 checkpoints, it’s understandable that the small three-person team wouldn’t want to rush their work. Given the high expectations surrounding the game, prioritizing quality over meeting potentially unrealistic deadlines is undoubtedly the right approach in the long run.
February 14 is an important date, as the date the sequel was announced in 2019. While last year’s anniversary passed without an official update, follow-ups have reassured fans that the game is still in development. According to a playtester’s comments from June 2024, Hollow Knight: Silksong is not in development hell, and Matthew Griffin, the Marketing & Publishing lead for Team Cherry, responded to an X post that read “Is Silksong real?” with a simple “Yes” on December 26.
If Silksong Gets Another Trailer, What Could It Show?
If the sequel were to be released this year, Team Cherry would likely release a new trailer beforehand. The announcement trailer for Hollow Knight: Silksong offered players a glimpse of the score, tool system, quests, and allies, while the Xbox Game Pass Reveal Trailer highlighted the environment and introduced new mechanics. The biggest draw in a third trailer would be if it came with an official release date. It’s worth noting that additional details about Hornet’s story, other characters, and a few nods to familiar faces could also significantly build excitement.
