There is an underrated X-Men character ready to fill Hulk’s role within the MCU moving forward.
Movie insider and scooper @MyTimeToShineH claimed that World War Hulk is “officially in development.” In late 2021, there were rumors that Marvel Studios planned to produce the movie the following year. There were speculations that the film would be tied to She-Hulk: Attorney at Law starring Tatiana Maslany because Bruce Banner, aka The Hulk, portrayed by Mark Ruffalo, played a significant role in the series. Also, the post-credit scene of the series hinted at storylines involving Bruce’s time on Sakaar, which served as a groundwork for a potential World War Hulk narrative.
World War Hulk is from a popular Marvel Comics storyline written by Greg Park in 2007. It’s a sequel to the Planet Hulk arc and explores the themes of revenge, betrayal and redemption. It follows Hulk’s journey after the Illuminati exiled him to the planet Sakaar because they deemed him too dangerous to stay on Earth. Illuminati is a secret group of Marvel heroes whose members include Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Mister Fantastic, Professor X and more. While in Sakaar, Hulk became a gladiator and eventually led an uprising against the Red King, the planet’s ruler. Hulk found love with Caiera the Oldstrong and they were expecting a child. However, a tragedy struck when the ship that brought Hulk to the planet exploded and destroyed Sakaar, killing its inhabitants, including the love of his life. Hulk was enraged and grief-stricken and he blamed Illuminati for the incident. He returned to Earth and fought the Earth’s heroes, including the Avengers, Fantastic Four and X-Men. He defeated them all, but later learned that the Illuminati had nothing to do with the explosion in Sakaar. Hulk was embroiled with guilt when he saw the destruction he caused and surrendered. He was later imprisoned in high-tech facility.
World War Hulk is a good storyline to pursue. It touches on the themes of revenge, redemption, betrayal, strength and vulnerability, which are relatable to many. Also, it’s high time for Ruffalo to star in a solo Hulk movie in the MCU. Hulk is one of the original Avengers along with Captain America (Chris Evans), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner). Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow and Thor have all gotten their own solo movies. Meanwhile, Renner’s Hawkeye scored his own series on Disney Plus. All of them, except Ruffalo’s Hulk, haven’t scored their own film or TV series, so World War Hulk is a long time overdue.
A solo Hulk movie starring Ruffalo will surely resonate with Marvel fans who have been waiting for it. Many have already expressed interest in exploring the character’s depth and relationships. According to reports, Marvel Studios hasn’t produced a solo Hulk movie because Universal Pictures holds the distribution rights. If they make a standalone movie for Hulk, Universal has the first option to distribute it in theaters and Marvel Studios would earn less from the film. Universal also has the right to refuse any Hulk project. However, there are rumors that Universal’s deal concerning Hulk expired in 2023, so Marvel Studios could press on with the standalone Hulk movies. This remains unconfirmed, so fans should wait for an official announcement from Marvel Studios.
