Summary
- Final Fantasy 7 has one of the most likeable parties in an RPG, which makes picking a favourite a tough ask.
- Not so for the game’s developer and series producer, though, as they both picked theirs during a recent interview.
- Hamaguchi’s favourite is none other than Cloud, who he describes as “like family” due to how long he’s been working on him.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth‘s director, Naoki Hamaguchi, has confirmed that his favourite character in the Remake duology so far is none other than its protagonist, Cloud Strife.
Without a doubt, one of the strongest parts of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy (well, the two parts that we’ve played so far, at least) is its wonderful cast of characters. Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, Barret, and pretty much everyone else were already iconic back when the original Final Fantasy 7 launched, but that’s been taken to a whole new level with Remake and Rebirth.

As everyone begging for Tifa to be in Tekken no doubt knows, it’s very easy for fans to pick a favourite among the cast, and pretty much every choice is valid. You might be wondering what the developers behind Rebirth and Remake think when it comes to picking the top dog, which is exactly what they’ve answered in a recent interview.
Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Director Says Cloud Is His Favourite Character
Earlier this week, GamesRadar+ reported that Rebirth and Remake’s director Naoki Hamaguchi and series producer Yoshinori Kitase took part in an interview with Danny Pena. Pena asked the pair about which character from the two games are their favourites, which led to both talking about who and why.
Hamaguchi started off by noting that his choice is a bit cliché, since his favourite of the bunch is Cloud. He explained that it’s because he’s been working on the Remake trilogy for nearly a decade at this point, and he’s always had Cloud there in front of him during development. Because of this, Cloud has become “like family” to Hamaguchi, which is actually rather sweet.
I’ve been on the Final Fantasy 7 Remake project for about 8 or 9 years at this point, and I’ve always had Cloud there, visibly. I don’t think there was a time that I haven’t seen him in front of me, so he’s almost like family to me at this point. – Naoki Hamaguchi
On the other hand, the original Final Fantasy 7 director, Yoshinori Kitase said that his favourite character in the game is Vincent Valentine because he always wanted to introduce a character with an atmosphere that leans into horror. That’s an interesting answer considering we haven’t had the chance to play as Vincent yet, but Kitase notes that he’s excited to see how he’d depicted in the next game.
