Every Age Of Empires Game, Ranked

Age of Empires is one of the most enduring franchises in gaming history and a cornerstone of the RTS genre. What’s the best title in the series?

There are many important elements in Age Of Mythology Retold for new players to get to grips with. One big strategic element is transporting units en masse for an attack, either by water, air, or over land. Players can spring a surprise on enemies in many different ways, and there are a variety of transport units via which they can accomplish this. Still, players must be careful about weaker transport units, as they can be destroyed and players will subsequently lose an awful lot of resources in terms of troops.

Pirate Ships

Useful But Generally Unavailable

Age Of Mythology Retold Pirate Shipss
  • Archer Ship That Can Transport
  • Only Available During Certain Campaign Missions

Although they cannot be used frequently throughout Age Of Mythology Retold, Pirate Ships are a useful mode of both attack and transport. Players in certain campaign missions or during created scenarios can make use of these to great effect. However, though they can transport units, the capacity is small and, therefore, they aren’t often used for this purpose.

Only in very special situations, like the campaign mission “Good Advice,” can pirate ships be used for larger volumes of transport. Generally, they act similarly to archer ships, and can only carry a small quantity of units. While this makes them useful wherever they turn up, players shouldn’t rely on or think about them as transportation too much.

9

Shifting Sands

Simple God Power For Low-level Transportation

Age Of Mythology Retold Shifting Sands
  • God Power That Can Teleport Units
  • Available To Egyptians In The Classical Age

The Egyptian civilization comes with some of the best ways to transport units in Age Of Mythology Retold. This goes double for the original game when the Atlantean civilization didn’t exist yet. Shifting Sands is not the best God Power for transportation, but it is a great early method for swift transportation in case the player wants to mount or retreat from an attack.

Players can use Shifting Sands for a variety of things, including helping villagers escape from a raid or helping defend or attack a certain point on the map. Having visibility at both points is an important problem for players to solve, but it is easily rectifiable with the use of scouting or flying units.

8

Helepolis

Small Numbers But Great For Surprise Attacks

Helepolis Units In Age Of Mythology Retold
  • Siege Weapons That Units Can Hide Within
  • Available To Greeks In The Mythic Age

Although it is actually a siege weapon, the Greek Helepolis unit can house up to five different units, and due to the passive “manned engine” ability, it deals 5% more damage for each unit garrisoned inside. The Helepolis already does huge crush and pierce damage, and it does extra damage against walls.

Choosing a pantheon is an essential aspect of any Age of Mythology playthrough. Here’s how all the game’s options stack up.

This means the Helepolis can break down towers or walls with heightened attack, keep units safe inside, and then unleash units from within to deal with defenders when they arrive. A little-known but highly useful ability, Helepolis transports can devastate and confuse enemies.

7

Vortex

A Much More Powerful God Power

Age Of Mythology Retold Vortex
  • God Power That Teleports All Military Units
  • Available To Atlanteans In The Mythic Age

The Atlanteans have got some fascinating and overpowering God powers. Vortex is a slightly double-edged sword, unlocked by advancing to the Mythic Age using the Minor God Helios. It allows a player to immediately teleport all of their military units to a single location.

While this can be a devastating and sudden final assault on an enemy, Vortex must be used carefully. Players should probably make sure they are training new units while using it, otherwise they’ll be left without a single defending unit at their base or anywhere else on the map. Despite being dangerous, Vortex is hugely useful and can be monstrous against an unprepared enemy.

6

Sky Passage

Needs Building But Is Permanent If Not Destroyed

Age Of Mythology Sky Passages
  • Buildings That Allow Units To Teleport
  • Available To Atlanteans In The Archaic Age

The Sky Passage is one of the most useful advantages to Atlantean players in Age of Mythology Retold. It is a special building only available to those whose Major God is Oranos, but it is available anytime in the game and several of them can be built, allowing players to transport units constantly to different points on the map.

Sky Passages take time to build, but they can at least be placed in every base a player owns, allowing them to keep control of all their locations with only one defensive force needed. This is hugely advantageous and allows players to sneak entire armies to locations where the enemy can’t even comprehend their being.

5

Arrow Ships

Viable But Low On Numbers

Age Of Mythology Retold Various Archer Ships
  • Archer Ship That Can Transport
  • Available To Any Civilization In The Classical Age

There are different arrow ships available to each civilization which have basically the same attributes (Triremes, Kebenit, Longboat & Bireme). In each case, these are the basic attacking ships for that civilization, but they are also a transport option if the player doesn’t need to move a whole army.

Age Of Mythology: Retold – Best Units For Norse Civilization

Age Of Mythology Retold features many impressive units and exciting creatures, but the Norse Civilization can be hard to get a grip on.

Arrow ships are something players are likely to get early on to protect either their docks or fishing ships, and they have a much better chance of fighting through enemy lines and surviving than transport ships would. This makes them a strong option for bringing units across bodies of water in Age of Mythology Retold.

4

Underworld Passage

Permanent God Power

Age Of Mythology Retold Underworld Passage
  • God Power That Links Two Points
  • Available To Greeks In The Heroic Age

The Greek civilization has many great God powers, and Underworld Passage is particularly ideal for players looking to transfer units to a specific point. By researching with the minor God Apollo, players can place underworld passage buildings in two distinct locations, which are permanent unless destroyed, and units can flood swiftly between.

For players with two separate bases, or looking to get a foothold on a different island on certain maps, this power is hugely useful. Entire armies can move through an underworld passage in seconds, making it incredibly hard for enemies to get rid of one once it has been placed. Arguably the best transportation-based God Power, the Underworld Passage can be a game-ender when well-used.

3

Transport Ships

The Most Units In One Swoop

Age Of Mythology Retold Transport Ships
  • Ship That Can Transport Many Units
  • Available To Any Civilization In The Classical Age

The standard transport ship is one of the only units that is almost completely standardized across all civilizations in Age of Mythology Retold. It can carry up to 25 standard units, an entire army in one ship, which is hugely buffed in the remake compared to the original Age of Mythology.

Additionally, transport ships come with a passive ability that makes them invulnerable to God Powers, and they all have high pierce armor, making them resistant to enemy arrow ships trying to stop them from unloading their troops. Players always run the risk of losing a huge number of troops if a transport ship is sunk, but they move quickly and have advantages that generally make this unlikely to happen.

2

Leviathan

A Destructive Beast & Safe Mode Of Transport

Age Of Mythology Retold Leviathan Units
  • Myth Unit That Can Transport Units
  • Available To Egyptians In The Heroic Age

The Egyptian civilization has some of the very best modes of transport in Age of Mythology Retold. The Leviathan is a powerful myth unit available when advancing to the Heroic Age. It is a swimming beast that can transport several units and is likely to get them anywhere due to the strength of the creature itself.

The Leviathan is strong in general, likely beating out an individual enemy ship, but a recent Age of Mythology Retold update has also given the Leviathan a 2x multiplier against other myth units, making it even able to survive and beat many of the most powerful naval units in the game.

1

Roc

The Flying Myth Unit Transport

Roc Units In Age Of Mythology Retold
  • Myth Unit That Can Transport Units
  • Available To Egyptians In The Heroic Age

The best way to transport units in Age of Mythology Retold is undoubtedly the Roc. This flying unit is unlocked by Egyptians who advance to the Heroic Age with Sobek. The Roc is a fast-moving flying myth unit that deals no damage but can transport units directly into the heart of enemy bases, causing absolute havoc on another level and being easily trained so players can send in entire surprise armies.

Some of the most entrenched players who focus on walls, towers, and other defensive formations can be caught out by several Rocs sneaking in from the side and letting enemy forces loose in a deadly position. Age of Mythology Retold is a game about outsmarting the enemy, and Roc units are some of the most frustrating to try and consistently counteract.
