In the last few years, Sega has been rather busy. Its flagship franchise, Sonic the Hedgehog, has been on a complete roll for the last three years with its games and movies, Metaphor: ReFantazio took three awards at The Game Awards to close out 2024, and the series formerly known as Yakuza has been enjoying a new life under the Like a Dragon name for some time now. For fans of Sega, there’s certainly been lots to keep an eye out for over the last while.
Luckily for those fans, Sega is showing no signs of stopping anytime soon. Fans of the more prominent of the company’s IPs have at least a few things to look forward to this year, even if 2025 isn’t as impressive as the last couple of years before it so far. There’s even plenty of room for Sega to surprise even the most die-hard fans with some releases coming later in the year that it might have been saving for a rainy day on the way to 2026.

Sega’s Currently Known 2025 Releases
When it comes to Sega’s more concrete plans for 2025, only five or six titles are outright confirmed to release as of right now. While some are rather expected, with Like a Dragon and Sonic adding new games to their lineup, Sega is shaking things up a little this year. The company may have plenty of plans for upcoming titles, such as the resurrection of several classic IPs, but those don’t seem to be seeing anything fans can look forward to right now outside of Virtua Fighter.

- Sonic Rumble global release – Said to release in Winter, meaning sooner rather than later.

- Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii – February 2025
When it was announced at The Game Awards, Geoff Keighley himself said Sonic Racing CrossWorlds would release more news in 2025. Despite the lack of a concrete release date, Keighley also mentioned that he had already played a build of the game, suggesting its release might not be far off. This may work out in Sega’s favor, as there’s a notable trend with all the publisher’s confirmed releases so far, and that’s the lack of any titles beyond the first quarter of Sega’s fiscal year. For gamers, that leaves plenty of room for a few unexpected announcements to look out for.
What Surprises Fans Might Get From Sega in 2025
Parts of Sega have already teased that there are exciting things in the works that the developers can’t wait to announce yet; the biggest teases involving the future of Jet Set Radio and Atlus’ projects. These teases haven’t specifically stated any releases, but exciting announcements regarding Jet Set Radio and possibly Persona 6 may be part of Sega’s plans for 2025. There are also rumors of games like a Sonic Heroes remake circling around that may have some merit, but don’t seem to hold weight in the face of Sonic Racing CrossWorlds. Sonic fans should sit tight this year in particular, as the blue blur seems to be slowing down after the last three huge years only to pick up speed again in 2026, much like many of Sega’s other projects.
As things currently stand, it’s hard to say if Sega will have much to show this year, as the biggest things the company has in the works are slated to kick off in 2026. There will likely be a few surprises later in the year, but 2026 is said to mark the release of Sega’s “super game”, as well as the tentative release year for the start of the classic IP revival games for Crazy Taxi and more that was announced in 2023. 2026 also marks Sonic the Hedgehog‘s 35th anniversary, which leaves Sonic Racing CrossWorlds as a perfect appetizer before yet another exciting year for Sega’s mascot to follow after. With what’s coming in a year’s time, a potentially quiet 2025 will certainly be worth sitting through for any die-hard Sega fan.
