Summary
- Fans are puzzled over the absence of key character Tom Matthews in Dexter: Original Sin, given his significant role in the original series.
- Despite the missing character, a fan theory suggests that the role of Matthews will likely be introduced in the prequel series, potentially tying up loose ends.
- It is speculated that Matthews’ absence may be purposeful in building suspense, paving the way for a potential unforeseen connection to Harry Morgan in future seasons of Original Sin.
Dexter: Original Sin has become a massive hit on Paramount+ with Showtime, but with four episodes to go, there is one key character who has yet to make an appearance, and it’s baffling to longtime fans. Tom Matthews was a recurring character in the original series, and he had significant links to Harry Morgan, but he is nowhere to be seen in the prequel series.
Dexter and Debra Morgan would always seek answers from Matthews when it came to their late father, and it was clear he was a known figure to them as they grew up, so where is he? Aaron Spencer and Bobby Watt have been seen as Harry’s close confidantes in Original Sin, but the series needs to introduce Matthews sooner rather than later.

At the start of the original Dexter series, Tom Matthew was the Captain at Miami Metro, and he was close to Dexter and Debra Morgan due to a personal and professional relationship with their father, Harry Morgan prior to his death. Original Sin takes place over the course of two weeks, and it is around one year before Harry dies, meaning Matthews should have already been introduced. Matthews was the one who told Dexter that his adoptive father actually committed suicide, instead of overdosing on his heart medication. Harry supposedly entrusted Matthews with the job of looking out for Dexter and Debra, and he did just that throughout the original series.
There is a fan theory that suggests Matthews knew about Dexter’s dark passenger, especially as he appears to shut down Maria LaGuerta’s suggestions that the forensic analyst is actually the Bay Harbor Butcher in the penultimate season of the original show. As casting announcements for Dexter’s prequel came to light, fans were puzzled that nobody had been cast in the role of Tom Matthews. However, an actor called Matthew William was cast in a recurring role as a ‘Miami Metro Police Officer’ in Original Sin back in September 2024, and he does have a striking likeness to a young Geoff Pierson, who played Matthews in the original series. Having said that, Matthews still hasn’t turned up, and its unclear if this particular actor will be playing him.
Original Sin Has To Introduce Matthews At Some Point And There Is Probably A Logical Reason Why He hasn’t Turned Up Yet
Patrick Dempsey plays Aaron Spencer in Original Sin, a role that Matthews would later take on. It’s quite possible that Matthews will take over from Spencer at the end of the first series, and become close to Harry Morgan in the lead up to his death. Spencer is one of Harry’s closest friends in the prequel series, alongside Bobby Watt, and they both appear to be filling the void left by Matthews in the prequel. However, fans shouldn’t be too concerned, as there is still plenty of time for Matthews to turn up. Dempsey is only contracted to one season of Original Sin, so there is every chance his character will either be killed off or depart Miami Metro by the end of the debut season, especially with the current storyline putting his young son in danger.
There is another possibility: Maybe Matthews wasn’t as close to Harry Morgan as he claimed to be, and he was lying to Dexter and Debra all along. Matthews was always a shady character with political ambitions, so what if Harry uncovered one of his secrets and Matthews had him killed? It was quite strange that Matthews initially lied to Dexter and Debra about how their father died, before admitting he actually committed suicide. Would Harry Morgan really kill himself? Christian Slater’s iteration of the character in Original Sin has peeled back the layers of what he was really like, and it raises doubts over Matthews’ version of events. Harry was supposedly so horrified by what Dexter had become, that he took his own life. Let’s not forget, it was Harry who trained his son to become a serial killer with a code, so seeing him actually carrying out a murder wouldn’t necessarily tip him over the edge. There is something more to it, and if Original Sin is renewed for a second season, fans might finally get the real answer, if Matthews eventually turns up.
