Nowadays, it’s hard to find a video game without a film or TV adaptation attached, but one often-forgotten title in the works for the screen is Shadow of the Colossus. There has been no word on the film adaptation for years, but a recent update has proven the project is still alive.
Shadow of the Colossus was one of Sony’s stand-out games on the PS2 in 2005. It has been remastered multiple times for new PlayStation consoles and was one of the highest-rated games of the year at the time of release. The story involves a young man named Wander who goes on a mission to destroy the sixteen colossi spread across the forbidden land in an attempt to revive a girl named Mono. A film adaptation of the game has been in development since 2009 and was long thought to be shelved after years with no news.

The Shadow of the Colossus Movie Is Still Happening
The Shadow of Colossus adaptation went through multiple creatives during its development period since 2009, with Josh Trank once attached as director. This eventually shifted in 2014, when it was reported that Andy Muschietti would take on directing duties after Trank dropped out. For almost 10 years there’s been little word of the project, with Muschietti moving on to direct other projects like It: Chapter One and It: Chapter Two, The Flash, and the upcoming IT: Welcome to Derry. However, the director recently gave an update reiterating the project is still happening.
In an interview with Reconectados, Muschietti revealed that the Shadow of the Colossus film has not been abandoned and that a script has been written. “I love that film, there is a script that I like a lot,” he said, adding “The film has been in development for 10 years, and now the possibility of making it opens up.” The director added that budget is a large part of the difficulty in getting Shadow of the Colossus made. “Shadow of the Colossus is a cult game, but to make a good film there is a studio that puts the numbers and says how much it is worth to give the director 200, 150 or 100 million dollars. There are different versions of the film and obviously, I want them to give me 200 million, but this is another factor to take into account.”
“I love that film, there is a script that I like a lot, but there are factors that have nothing to do with your hobby and desire to make it, but with how popular an intellectual property like this is.”
The Success of Recent Video Game Adaptations Could Be A Good Sign for Shadow of the Colossus
Shadow of the Colossus is an adaptation that would rely heavily on big-budget set pieces and visual effects, given its fantasy setting. Video game adaptations have been riding a wave of popularity of late, with Five Nights at Freddy’s, Sonic the Hedgehog, The Last of Us, and Fallout all considered successful. It’s possible this trend could be enough to reignite interest in the Shadow of the Colossus film and provide the film with enough financial backing to adapt the beloved game properly.
