Summary
- Final Fantasy 12 should get a sequel set in the expansive world of Ivalice.
- Crystal Chronicles deserves a revisit with a sequel that expands its charming world.
- Final Fantasy Tactics could return with stunning HD-2D graphics and new characters.
Through sixteen mainline entries and multiple spin-offs, the Final Fantasy franchise has seen its fair share of sequels. Even though Square Enix has consistently described Final Fantasy as an anthology series with no connective tissue between entries, they are certainly not above it, and many of the franchise’s best games have seen sequels. Some games, however, have been left without sequels and would benefit greatly from a continuation of some sort.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles
This Unique Action RPG Deserves A Second Chance
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles was the first home console game in the franchise that Square worked on following their split from Nintendo in 1994, as it launched on the GameCube in 2003. This unique, charming action RPG is played more like a Diablo game, featuring a top-down perspective and a party of four working together. The Crystal Chronicles subseries would also include two fascinating entries, My Life As A King and My Life As A Darklord, WiiWare games built around kingdom and city management.

The Final Fantasy franchise has something for everyone, including a few relaxing and cozy entries that are perfect for winding down.
The combination of the original Crystal Chronicles with the city building of My Life as a King and its sequel would make for one of the most intriguing Final Fantasy sequels, as this warm, inviting world needs to be revisited. While mainline games in the series tend to focus on worlds that blend science fiction with fantasy, the world of Crystal Chronicles feels much softer and cozier, with bright-eyed characters and a kind of folksy energy. Crystal Chronicles was recently remastered for the Switch and PS4, so a sequel would be more than appropriate right now.

Final Fantasy Tactics
Tactical Strategy RPG Could Return In Breathtaking HD-2D
Final Fantasy Tactics was directed by Yasumi Matsuno, who took over the project when series creator Hironobu Sakaguchi couldn’t due to his commitment to the main series. It turned out to be the right decision, as his eye for strategy RPGs served the game well, resulting in one of the best PS1 games of all time. This outstanding title has received multiple ports and altered versions, but a direct sequel has remained elusive over the years.
Recently, with the debut of Octopath Traveler, Square Enix has cultivated a beautiful new art style known as HD-2D, which combines 2D sprites with 3D geometry. A sequel using new, much more powerful hardware than the PS1 and the HD-2D art style would be an absolute no-brainer. Bringing back fan-favorite characters like Ramza, as well as introducing a new cast of characters, could make for one of the most anticipated Final Fantasy sequels of all time.

Dissidia Final Fantasy
A New Final Fantasy Fighter Is A Must
For as many genres as Final Fantasy has expanded to, it has surprisingly few entries in the fighting game genre, save for the Dissidia series. With only four main entries, the last one being less of a fighting game and more of a traditional JRPG, it’s time for a new Dissidia sequel and one that celebrates the entirety of the franchise.

Not only is the Final Fantasy franchise beloved by fans, but it also features some of the most iconic protagonists.
A new Dissidia sequel would be able to take full advantage of the current generation of consoles, with highly detailed characters and even more cinematic battles. And thanks to the time that has passed since the last Dissidia, the roster could be massive. New characters like Clive from Final Fantasy 16 will have to join the fray, while old favorites like Cloud Strife and Terra Branford make sense to return, as well. A new Final Fantasy fighter feels like a slam dunk, as it’s been a while since a true sequel to Dissidia was given any time of day by Square.

Tose
To appeal to a younger, more impressionable audience, Square wanted to make a Final Fantasy game that made it more accessible and celebrated the rich, long-running history of their JRPG franchise. It was a good decision, as World of Final Fantasy turned out to be one of the most charming, wholesome games the series has ever seen, featuring characters like Rydia, Squall, and Lightning all coming together.
It stands to reason, then, that a sequel to World of Final Fantasy would continue this trend, as despite having a large roster of classic characters, it had a few that were missing. Balthier and Vaan from Final Fantasy 12 would be great candidates, as would Clive from FF16. And it’s not just heroes that could appear, as Benedikta from FF16 and fan favorites like Sephiroth and Ultimecia would make great bosses for a potential World of Final Fantasy sequel. Whatever direction Square would take, a sequel to this lovely game would be a fantastic way to celebrate Final Fantasy‘s upcoming 40th anniversary in 2027.

Final Fantasy Type-0
This Dark Final Fantasy Spin-Off Deserves A Sequel
- Released

October 27, 2011
Originally envisioned as a mobile game, Final Fantasy Type-0 is the second game in the Fabula Novala Crystallis subseries, which began with the 13 trilogy. Focused largely on the crystal mythology that defined the franchise in the beginning, the Fabula Novala Crystallis series hasn’t been heard from since Final Fantasy 15, which means it’s more than ready for a return. With Type-0, Square envisioned a much darker, more adult vision of Final Fantasy, and it paid off brilliantly.
Following the end of Type-0, a sequel would have to follow a new group from the Vermillion Peristylium Academy, as Class Zero tragically died during the finale of the original. A sequel could also canonize the alternate ending, which saw Class Zero go on to live happy lives. Either way, a sequel to Type-0 is an absolute must, as this fast-paced, compelling story of war and betrayal would be a perfect way to revitalize the Fabula Novala Crystallis series and explore a side of the franchise that hasn’t been heard from in a decade.
