A controversial Final Fantasy 14 mod called PlayerScope that tracks character data without player consent has made the rounds on social media as users raised security concerns over the addon’s potential for abuse. Final Fantasy 14 players also expressed their worries over any action that Square Enix could potentially take.

The terms of service strictly prohibit the use of mods or third-party tools in Final Fantasy 14, though Square Enix’s enforcement of its current policy against mods relies heavily on player reports. However, that has not stopped some Final Fantasy 14 players from using mods for either quality-of-life or cosmetic reasons or to gain an unfair advantage in high-end content. During the Futures Rewritten (Ultimate) raid in November, one of the competing teams called GRIND was found to have used a Final Fantasy 14 mod that added a red targeting reticle that is not normally there, which led to GRIND’s disqualification from the Race to World First event.

On the r/ffxivdiscussion subreddit, players have discussed the ramifications of a mod called PlayerScope that allows users who install it to scan the Account ID data of any character that they see, without the target’s knowledge or consent, including main and alternate characters and retainer names. The update to Final Fantasy 14‘s blacklists that arrived in Patch 7.0 also changed the way account ID data is stored on the client side, making add-ons like PlayerScope able to scrape the data without much effort. The character data obtained by PlayerScope is then uploaded to a server maintained by the mod’s author and not by Square Enix. In response, players shared their worries that bad actors would use the mod to stalk and harass anyone, on top of potential security vulnerabilities.

Controversial Final Fantasy 14 Mod PlayerScope Draws Worry From Players

Although the mod maker has released an opt-out function via their Discord server, Final Fantasy 14 players have expressed concerns that the mod could lead to Square Enix implementing an anti-cheat client in the future. At the time of writing, Square Enix has not commented on the PlayerScope situation. However, the company recently created a new anti-harassment policy that would allow Square Enix to take legal action against employee abuse by toxic fans.

Between the PlayerScope controversy and a string of technical issues that plagued Final Fantasy 14‘s servers, the game has had a rough start to 2025. It’s uncertain how Square Enix will respond to players’ worries.
